Packtite Max Temp - Getting TOO hot?

Ok, I just used my Packtite for the first time. I put in 4 XL Ziplock bags and the temperature went up to 147 degrees F in about 30 min, so I turned it off, afraid of melting them. Nothing melted, but I'm just wondering, does the packtite ever stabilize at a temperature, or does it just keep getting hotter and hotter? How do you heat things up to 140 without going way over?
I have a TON of stuff to packtite, so hoping this gets easier.

Can you put the items inside the bags in the Packtite without the ziplocks?

I sometimes baked them to 150, not melt...

I don't think it should go way over.

Most of your damage is going to be seen once you get above 150 and really even closer to 160. When I placed temperature sensors in the Packtite unit we did see some hot spots push 150 but it shouldn't be going much above that. If it is, then David James should be made aware.
So in short, yes the unit does stabilize and you shouldn't see temperature get above 150.
It will take temperatures well above 150 to melt most forms of plastic. Ziploc bags will become soft at those temperature but shouldn't begin to melt.

The "hottest" way to run a packtite is nearly or mostly empty. With only a few plastic bags in there, it will reach its hottest temps very quickly. We have run the units many, many times and even run them with plastic bags tied directly to the metal shelf in attempts to see if they would melt, and to date we have not melted any bags that we have tested. If you fill those ziplocs with items, you will find that it will take much longer for the unit to reach those temperatures. If something is wrong with your unit, which it doesn't sound like, but if there is a problem, the unit has two separate thermal cut off devices that are designed to shut the unit down.

Thanks to all for their answers. I was cleaning 4 empty ziplock bags (my dirty clothes bags, empty after a trip to the laundromat). Next time, I'll fill them w/something.

Is there anybody here that SWEARS by packtite?
How much does a unit cost?I would seriously consider investing in one, but so far the posts I see regarding it are all over the place.
I have LOTS of stuff SEALED in bins and containers, so this might be a godsend to me for "unpacking" (before18mo), provided it works™ and doesn't fail or destroy my belongings.
Advice? Wisdom? :\
