    Hi there,
I just moved to NYC (Upper West Side) with 2 1/2 year old and husband in tow. We actually had bedbugs back in 2005 (yes, we were pioneers; we moved to get rid of them) and are trying to avoid getting them now.
Problem is, we have really very little time and my husband has been dropping off our laundry at the neighborhood laundromat. Not only is this expensive, I also am horrified to see them dropping our dirty laundry right into a big pile of other people's dirty laundry. From the looks of the place, I can't trust that they take any precautions at all about bugs. We ask them to seal our clothes in plastic but I'm sure that wouldn't help too much if the clean clothes are being folded on a dirty table.

I was just about to buy a Packtite so we can cook all the clean laundry from the laundromat when I read the precautions in the Packtite instructions: "take extreme precautions around children." I have a toddler with a lot of energy. She likes climbing things, opening things, jumping on things, etc. etc. and no amount of warning keeps her away from things like touching the stove etc. though she is learning. And, I live in a 450 square foot one bedroom apartment, so there is no place I can think of to put the Packtite that would be "out of reach."

I am thinking of just buying a small washing machine instead and letting our clothes air-dry. I wouldn't help with things if I brought a bug home inside my shoes or purse or a backpack, though.

Any thoughts at all? How dangerous is a Packtite to a *very* rambunctious little girl? Does the outside get hot enough to cause a burn?

    Hi,

It does not get hot enough to burn or cause damage.

It may however be an idea to use the tabs on the zipper to padlock it closed during and between uses to discourage the child from wanting to investigate it.

You may also want to supplement your avoidance strategy with a little early detection to get the best of both worlds. There is lots of information in the useful section of this site.

Of course, we hope the whole site is "the useful section of the site."

I think David means either the FAQs or the Useful Stuff section-- in the latter case, monitors are of special interest.

You're right to be wary of laundromat wash and fold services. No matter how clean, they don't tend to have the awareness or the facilities to ensure the laundry is kept bed bug free.
