My mom keeps telling me that I should do this and I thought she was crazy to think that my story would catch their eye, but now I realize that she, and all of you, are right. Oprah doing this story would open everyone's eyes to this nightmare. I'll definately be writing in!!!

    Here's what I wrote. I hope I didn't offend anyone.

Hello. I'm a bedbug sufferer. I have two disabled children who are affected as well. I live in NYC and the mayor seems to not be addressing the issue. A lot of people are not educated on this issue and the problem is getting worse major fast. The only ones who are able to take care of the problems are people with money. It takes a lot of money and time on top of everything else like everyday living. My eldest son used to go in his drawers for clothes, but now I have to do All his clothes for him because he has coordination problems. We are living out of bags everywhere. It looks like my apartment is ready for war. A lot of people do not want to exposed as having bedbugs. I, too, was afraid. Not anymore. People can't fight without showing themselves. You can get bedbugs from anywhere, theatres, subways, buses, co-workers, schools. I'm really concerned about the poor and the elderly and disabled. What I've been doing a disabled or elderly person cannot do. Our politicians need to address this and make their cities aware and by not telling is just hiding the problem. Oh, and if you get rid of the problem the first time, they can come back. I would be willing to come on your show and tell everyone my experiences. I'm afraid I'll be shunned. But, something needs to be done and I'm willing to take the risk. What has happened is not my or anyone's fault. It has nothing to do with being clean or dirty or rich or poor. All bedbugs want is you..their food. Please, think of the children, especially the poor one, the elderly and disabled.
    Regards,
    Janet Moss

Overcoming the social stigma would be major progress...I would be happy to show off a cute Beagle...maybe that could be a hook for the story...It is unfortunate that the social stigma keeps victims so isolated...Going public on Oprah would be such a godsend for all the isolated victims out there that do not have any support...which might be another way to appeal to producers of Oprah...we could ask them to throw out a lifeline for the hundreds of thousands of potential victims...Fund research for a magic bullet...Bed bugs are in Africa...perhaps some of the children she supports are being affected...Or just get them to recognize NoBugs efforts on the behalf of BB sufferers to provide this support group...If we could successfully reach out to one of the producers & get them to read the blog...That would probably get them hooked...This is a human interest story...We just need to find a way to overcome the yuck factor... or focus on a story like Lex Friedmans...Hotels that deliberately expose guests or a real scumbag of a landlord that refuses to do the right thing for the tenants...Righteous indignation themes seem to make it to the show...There are so many compelling situations...we just need to hit on an angle that produces good ratings & we could get a national spotlight for this epidemic...The more I think about it the more merit I see for the idea.

I think it's great that you guys are taking action to bring awareness to the growing bedbug epidemic, and it would be wonderful if it was a topic on Oprah's show. I encourage those of you who choose to write to Oprah's producers to be as factual and rational as possible. There are statistics you can rely on that are available on this blog- Nobugs did a fantastic post a while back about the actual numbers of people reporting bedbugs to the department of health in NYC. You can use the search function to find it. You could also mention the heightened awareness in the hotel industry, or the lawsuits that have been filed recently (including the one Maya Rudolph of Saturday Night Live fame filed last year), and remember the Gianaris legislation, which was passed with NO opposition. If Oprah's producers realize that this is an issue being recognized by important people, they might recognize that it's a topic worthy of covering.

Also, it might be helpful if you briefly explained what bedbugs are and how they affect people, since they are so difficult to exterminate. Most people out there (probably Oprah's staff included) still have either never heard of bedbugs, or assume they're like other household pests- you can hire an exterminator and, voila, they'll be gone. That's not the case, and I think it's really important to explain WHY bedbugs are so difficult to get rid of, and WHY it costs so much, and WHY they're spreading.

The more facts you give, the more rational you sound. I want you guys to be taken seriously, because God knows you deserve it! I encourage you to use all the information that's available to you on the blog to make strong cases for your cause. It's definitely a worthy one.

And NYJammin, I was really moved by your decision to be so honest about your situation. That took guts. Kudos to you. I know it's awful right now, but remember, you will be free of bedbugs someday. You will. I promise.

    :)

Jess thanks for the support. But how do you know I'll be rid of bbs? I've read about people battling bbs for years and this frightens me! It's just so much work. What if my boyfriend is bringing them in? How do I know. Sorry, I'm rambling. But, why do I have to give up a relationship because of bbs? Why?! How about the people who travel for a living. Should people get divorced because of that? Should I get rid of all my wood furniture and buy metal ones? How about people on the subways. If you travel to work every day doesn't that boast your chances of getting them. Should I not go to the movies or park? I don't know anymore.

WOW I echo those sentiments nearly exactly NYJ. This is one reason I stay home so much more ... it was why I was willing to do all the bb experiments which did not amount to much, and I wish I could convey to all of you, how insightful having all those bugs for a few days has made me.
Studying them more objectively ... really looking at the pooh and the eggs and the stages of life But while they were in the double plastic bags. Having the captive ("Olivia/wife and egg-child.") I do it all for ME and for all of US, as; Knowledge is Power! I
know bed bugs will not go away until we all pool together and share as best we can ...
it is amazing to me how much my mind had magnified the sizes of the bugs, (but that's normal) and that's why we have the double blind studies etc...
honestly--i would not do it again .. it was akin to like having 25 "Andromeda Strains" in my living space, well, not that bad--but bad! I'm half tempted to smother my wife and egg-child--and I'm not talking about smothering them with kisses. These bugs are lazy when content and tenacious when unfed!

Just as a lion in the savanna is to the elk and the zebra, the common bed bug is to us.
And if something "modern" isn't done SOON ...
It WILL be like that, ewvery day ... the survial of the fittest: Will we get or will we "re-get" bed bugs, over, and over, again!

I am so glad my LINK I provided to the Producers of the show are getting you guys going! I've been talking about OPRAH with Bugalina for months. You guys can say anything you want...as long as you link the Bedbuggers site...you won't have to come up with so many facts because the facts are right here on the site.

Also...Jess...S...you guys are in Chicago...so is OPRAH. Why wouldn't you write to her as well? She has to know there is a growing epidemic in Chicago...her home town???!!!!???

I think they could have an entire **audience** filled with us! Our "stars" could be up there with Oprah and the rest of us could cheer them on. Right now people don't want to hear about bedbugs. There's the "eew" factor. But there will be a tipping point and shows like to be ahead of the tipping point. Writing to them, under different e-mail addresses, is good because the producers literally COUNT how many requests they get for each topic. As the topic rises, they start to realize it is "hot." Shows want to deal with something that can have a happy ending, too ("My problem and how I solved it" kind of thing) so that might be another reason they are avoiding the problem.

Oprah lives in a large multi-unit building. Mark my words, if any celebrity could get bedbugs, it's the ones in New York City or Chicago high-rises who will get them. I wouldn't wish bedbugs on anyone, but I think a celebrity will rise up and support our cause because he/she has the problem themselves. Betty Ford did so much for addictions. Shirley Temple Black and others paved the way for women to talk about breast cancer. Bedbugs is one of those things PEOPLE DON'T TALK ABOUT, even on talk shows. I bless those who will speak up. This is going to change our country and world.

I think we should put a thread together....and nobugs or hopelessnomo could forward it...keep it short, sweet and to the point...a group bed bug monologe......The truth about the untold terrorist bug that is holding the USA hostage...
Oprah, you couldn't ask for a better show......It would probably be the first time in the history of your show, that you would be hestitant to let guests on the show because you were afraid they might be carrying bugs......that alone is weird enough.....

Just checking in to see if everyone is continuing to submit suggestions to Oprah? I am making it my personal quest to write, pardon the pun .... bug the heck out of every, major US TV show. I would like to see a piece on primetime American TV, like the piece on CBC. It would be great to see it on Dateline / 20/20 notifying the American public of this widespread epidemic. The public and our government need to be educated and take this seriously before it is too late.

THANKS Caliokitty and TorontoBugged. I KNOW that OPRAH will want to do a show on this. If we JUST KEEP "Bugging" her p.a's (production assistants) eventually one of them will say..."hey we're getting all these emails from Bedbuggers...gotta look into this...I think there's a show in this..."

something needs to! im so surprised she hasn't done anything on this subject yet. Especially after all the emails/letters people are sending her. I actually googled 'bed bugs on oprah' thinking she probably did a segment and gave kick ass recommendations, and this thread was like the 3rd page that came up. Geez Oprah needs to get on the ball! :)

Great idea! It crossed my mind a few days ago but since i have been so busy with the exterminator and packing everything in my home, i have not had the time to send a good email. I will make the time tomorrow evening.
How about sending pic attachements and showing how we live out of plastic bags with empty closets and drawers. Showing pictures of our bites and maybe how good our home once looked. Just a thought!

I have an idea. Recently on the Oprah Show, Oprah said that she reads her message boards everyday to see what people are saying. And for those of you who would be willing to post on her message boards(BTW, you would have to disclose your personal information), register and tell "our" story on one of her message boards:

    http://www.oprah.com/community/mb_list_landing.jspa

BTW, she has a "Health" and a "World & More" board which may be applicable.
