Got Bed Bugs? Bedbugger Forums » Bed Bug Treatment
one week after DE...
(5 posts)-
got my shipment of DE and the pest pistol a week ago and got to work. sprayed it everywhere i could....it looks like i live in a bakery now.
found a dead bb in the bathroom a couple of days ago, so i was psyched that it seemed to be working.
now today i was watching tv (daytime) and saw one coming straight at my foot. this was in my bedroom which is covered with DE. quickly killed it...actually lit it on fire with my lighter
so after a week shouldnt they be all dead?
maybe since i saw one during the day it means that the DE is working and theyre getting desperate?i was actually planning on vaccuming it all up and declaring victory. but i guess not

From what I've read here DE is most effective when it is almost invisible - just a light sheen of powder and only in places where it can't be disturbed i.e. cracks an crevices and around the very edge of the room. De in large quantities can get up into the air and into your lungs which can be very dangerous. The bugs will actually avoid detectable amounts of the powder so while it may give you temporary relief it won't accomplish what you want - to KILL THEM ALL. Recommended to wear a NIOSH respiratory mask when working with it and vacuum using a hepa filter vacuum

thanks for the reply.
yup, i have it mostly as a fine powder dust in almost all areas....looks like its just needs a really good dusting, but if you look hard enough you can see it. but in the baseboard areas, since i have some pretty big gaps, i used liberal amounts. (need to start with the caulking, i know)
just wondering if i should be worried if the DE isnt working since i spotted one. how long do you have to keep DE everywhere till you can say theyre 100% gone? this little bugger looked pretty emaciated, and im certain i have none in my bed...i have a good undisturbed coating of DE all around and a brand new mattress with encasements on, so i wont be losing any sleep over it.

My belief that DE is not healthy and bad for your stuff. In my case it had no obvious effect on the bed bugs either. After a few days I couldn't breathe anymore, felt miserable but it took days and four boxes of vacuum bags to get rid of it. My vacuum doesn't work well anymore since then and what's worse: it ruined my laptop. Some character keys e.g. the "l" randomly fail and there is a bad loud noise coming from inside. Despite vacuuming it meticulously, I think I'll have to buy a new one.
So I'm no fan of DE

I believe that DE has made a big difference in my fight against bed bugs because it is long lasting. It doesn't kill them immediately but works to dehydrate them by scratching their bodies. I probably only used about an ounce over a whole 4 level house though - just around the edges of the rooms and in the electrical boxes, etc. You really couldn't even see it - Rosae if it took 4 vacuum bags to get your de up possibly you used too much. I can see how it could damage your things. It's been about 2 months since I put it down so I am going to vacuum up what is there and put down a fresh application. I think it's a great alternative to spraying every 2 weeks
