I don't want to establish a sectarian slant to the website, and I think Bedbuggers need to work together from every possible angle to fight our common enemy (Cimex L.). Everyone is welcome here.

But please forgive me, I have to say it:

    Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Yes, We Can !!

Given the current economic problems that are holding the governments attention, it is going to be critically important to educate the incoming administration about the re-emergence of bed bugs.

We need the federal government to act on a national level.

Write your Congressperson a letter of congratulations for securing their seat (if they were just elected/re-elected) & casually ask them to support legislation that mandate effective measures to eradicate bed bug infestations in our communities & educate the public.

If you can arrange meet with your rep, then you can put a face on this problem.

If you become involved in the candidate's organization, you might get a chance to provide input for a new bill.

Don't forget to write to political appointees that are going to be taking office with the new administration. Sometimes, they can issue a rule faster than Congress can pass a new bill.

Ask the incoming Surgeon General, for example, to declare that bed bugs are vermin that constitute a public health emergency. A federal declaration would give state & local health departments a basis for taking action.

Ask your reps to challenge the incoming appointed public health officials about their plans to address the public transmission of these nightmare parasites during the confirmation process.

If we want to get their help...We first need to get their attention...Then we have to get their support.

    Thanks, Doug.

It is essential for everyone to contact their representatives in the way Doug describes. Contacting local politicians is essential too, since right now this mostly is being dealt with on a local level (if at all).

(If you are in NYC, you should ALSO join New York vs. Bed Bugs. In Chicago: Chicago vs. Bed Bugs.)

Can I just say, YEEEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAWWW! For the first time in my life I don't feel like a 2nd class citizen on the day after an election.
I live in Indiana by the way.

Not all of us are saying "YES!!!" I think capitalist inventions are our best bet to get out of this disaster and I hope the inevitable taxing and spending doesn't get in the way of funding that innovation.

However, I can definitely get on board with making governmental personnel at all levels aware of and hopefully working on this issue. I get ignored when I bring it up with my representatives so far.

Hopefully this is a neutral ground to say things without being attacked I didn't know I was a fan of Obama until last night. Reiterating your "yes!!!!!!"

On another unrelated subject, I'm truly saddened by California's choice to vote YES on Prop 8. Legalized discrimination. Sad sad day.

anyway, hopefully you all won't hate me for this little outburst.

While I am personally happy that Obama was elected, I am far more happy about voter turn out. Here in Los Angeles county, over 82% of registered voters turned out to vote.

To me, getting that many more people energized about the political process is much more important news in the long run. When work slows down a bit, I will write my local, state, and US reps.

Marixpress, thanks for saying so. I have to admit that being a lesbian in California, the news this morning has been bittersweet at best for me. I'm deeply saddened that Prop 8 looks like it's going to pass. It means a lot to me to hear that somebody else was upset by it. I haven't looked at the people around me with this much paranoia since I found out I had bed bugs; then, it was "Were you the source of infestation?" Now it's "Did you vote to write discrimination against me into the state constitution?"

Who knew that there would be a parallel between my feelings on bed bugs and my feelings on Prop 8?

Unfortunately, Florida narrowly passed amendment 2 which is similar to prop 8 in California.

    buggyinsocal, Marixpress, and Doug,

The news is definitely not all good, and some of it is quite bad in my opinion. I hope Prop 8 will be overturned.

    Marixpress,

I think this thread is a neutral ground. If anyone says anything attacking anyone on any grounds, I will probably shut it down as a failed experiment.

I am glad barelyliving felt free to register non-assent with my yes, and still supports Doug's idea that we contact politicians to talk about bed bugs.

God Bless America (and every other free country with public elections) - all of our voices and opinions count and matter

I too am very saddened by the vote in CA and FL - we've come so far but have so much more to work to do to accept all people

God Bless America for sure! I see hope on the horizon...and hope for Prop 8 to be overturned. Also - what a wonderful thread! So refreshing to take our minds off the BB war.

Adele - I, too, read cilecto's post about fighting BBs for 8 years and didn't catch the 'satire'. It is revealing that we all readily accepted an 8 year battle as being real! Marix...you are too funny! And, cilecto: I hope you are a journalist...

Onward and upward! Let's all write our elected officials as Doug suggested. The BB battle has to get some true action.

(PS Though I'm Canadian, I'm thrilled to be in DC during this historic event. I almost cried yesterday, just witnessing the joy I saw in people. Yesterday's copy of the Washington Post is coming home with me.)

I too am Canadian and so proud of Americians who voted for change. Canadians are mainly delighted with the choice. We also are able to marry same sex so hopefully that will be an option also down the road.Good medical coverage for all so people do not lose their shirts if they do not have private medical insurance.

I notice a number of empty avatar boxes above, mostly belonging to people whose usernames begin with "bug-".

    Maybe we can help them?

Yes, it does. The woman next to me last night on the Circulator bus couldn't stop smiling.

buggblues, you have a very beautiful home town. I just can't get over all the wonderful architecture! Maybe you should have a panda avatar, just like the panda's in the zoo?
