My husband and i moved into a shared house. After almost 2 weeks we noticed bites start to appear. I googled and immediately suspected bed bugs. I sent him to inspect and he found 3 on the matress and another 7 or 8 in the boxspring. We immediately let the lease holders know and were met with the blame game..ie it must have been us!! A**h*les! We had the same furniture for a year and no problems.
We left that night with toothbrushes and pjs and our pet rabbit andwent to stay with family. We maybe shouldnt have left but I could not face going back there to sleep. Im now scared we brought them with us!! I cleaned the rabbit cage before we left, its plastic and metal. We laundered a couple of items of clothing at high heat and sent the rest to be taken care of professionally! We have been staying here for about 5 days and I am covered in bites. They appeared in tens over the first couple of days, all over my legs arms and eventually my torso, starting as small red lumps and turning into large hard lumps and some smaller blisters (especially on my hands). I seem to be worse off than my husband. His seem to have subsided alot. Are these old bites just reacting later or have we brought an infestation? I have so many bites its hard to tell if they are still appearing or just itching at different times. The worry and guilt is killing me. Can anyone offer advice, help, moral support?
Thanks in advance -
It can take some people up to 9 days to show signs of being bitten. Everyone reacts differently and up to 70% of people show no reaction at all to bed bug bites. It's hard to tell at this point, if you've brought some with you. Actually all it takes is one pregnant female to start a new infestation. You might want to see a doctor though, since it sounds like you react quite strongly to them and perhaps are really allergic?
I'm so sorry that you are going through this. -
If you have a digital camera you can use it to determine which bites are showing up on a given day and which were there before.

Thanks, I am planning to see a doctor later today or first thing tomorrow. I now have a circular red welt on my thigh that is about 4 inches in diameter. Scary. Thanks for the tip about the camera, i will definitly start keeping a record to check against. In the mean time I will just hope and pray we didnt take them with us and keep referring to this fantastic site for support and ideas.

Just keep in mind that doctors cannot conclusively identify exactly what type of bug caused a bite. They can tell if the bites are from scabies. And they can tell you what general category of bug the bite was caused by. And they can usually tell you if it's not a bug bite.
But there is no conclusive way to have a doc tell you "Yep, definitely a bed bug" or not.

I have found that using rubbing alcohol relieves the itch and dries out the bites. I react terribly to bug bites in general, but particularly terrible to bed bug bites. I hope this situation gets better sooner.

Is it possible you have hives from an allergic reaction? I'm very sorry for all your troubles!

Actually, my bed bug bites were initially misdiagnosed as hives (until I finally spotted the bugs), so the reactions are similar. I had tried using over the counter itch relievers, but got no relief. From somewhere else in these forums, I got the suggestion of placing a hot wet towel on the bites for a few minutes and it got rid of the itching.
