New York vs Bed Bugs
(6 posts)-
If you are a New Yorker, please consider helping us.
We have started a campaign to get the City Council--and other officials--to form a bedbug task force in New York City. The idea is, Cincinnati and Toronto have one, each, so we want one too. ;)
The best way to help is to call, but you can also write letters. If you are stumped for what to say, we have a sample you can use.
I hope you will consider participating. If we don't do this now--this is very clear--nothing will change.
Best wishes...

Thank you very much for your posting....
We must educate the public and
I cut and pasted this from somewhere but I am passing it out to government and my neighbors and apts down the street. I see many beds laying on the side of Brooklyn brownstones. We often hear from PCOs who treat buildings that landlords will ask them to treat
just the infested room or rooms, and will often refuse to have other adjacent units
on the same or other floors inspected. I can only assume that many managers will
make the same request.
In such a case, it’s my understanding that PCOs have two choices: refuse the job
(knowing some other PCO will be happy to do as the landlord asks), or do the job,
knowing it is likely not enough. This is not an easy choice to make, by any means.
Depending a court’s findings in a current case, we may see a change in this. It
may mean more PCOs refuse to treat under such circumstances, insisting instead that
adjacent and nearby units are inspected and/or treated.
It could also have ramifications for the price of treatment, since it will doubtless
lead to more litigation along the same lines. You must Prepare
Preparing for Bed Bug Treatment. They need to come back a second time to kill eggs
as the first treatment does not....Leave everything sealed in Plastic til after
2nd treatment....Bed Bugs are tough to control. They hide in many places such as beds, closets, furniture,
behind pictures, in tiny cracks in the wall, baseboards, and more. So inspections
and treatments must be done thoroughly and by a skilled professional. Pest Management
Professionals need the cooperation of the customer to effectively control this pest.
Before a licensed technician can treat a home for Bed Bugs, the client must:Remove any Clutter in bedroom and living room areas such as Boxes, Paper, cans,
posters, clothing, luggage, etc
Remove all linens from beds couches, sofas, windows etc. and along with all the
clothing, launder all items in Hot Water and store in fresh plastic garbage bags
tied tightly. (Try to leave as much in these bags after treatment until 2 weeks
of no activity has occurred.)
Take down all picture frames or hanging items and lean them up against the walls
for treatment. Leave down 24 Hours and then put back.
Move all furniture one foot away from walls; empty each piece of furniture in bedroom
and living rooms as well as all closets. ( In rare occurrences, some items may need
to be discarded, which would be determined at time of service)
Vacuum any and all carpeting and sofas and throw vacuum bags out immediately.
Any visitor and or traveler can reintroduce bed bugs to structure and pose the possibility
of re- infestation if not addressed.
After treatment is completed, the customer must stay out for a minimum of one hour
and upon return should vacuum once again.I say time for a Spring Cleaning and get rid of stuff, you don't need. The less stuff you have the better.

freaked, I wrote the first paragraph you cite above, but not the others. I don't think your advice is entirely correct. First, most cases of bed bugs require 3 or more professional treatments, not two. Also, it's important if you are telling people to prep for treatment, to tell them NOT to do a single thing until a PCO has inspected and confirmed bed bugs. Why? Because people often clean away all evidence and then have trouble convincing someone to help them. Seriously.
I appreciate that you are trying to spread information, but make sure it is all 100% correct!
Sorry, hopelessnomo, to get off track here.

Nomo, I PM'd you a few suggestions for how to get the word out.
