We went to a Water Park in July. We stayed in a hotel on site. Weeks later, my adult son realized he had bed bugs. By the time he realized it, it was in his bed and dresser. I have never, ever EVER had to deal with this before. I was freaking out. I used an over the counter spray to get the initial bugs dead enough to move the mattress, boxspring and dresser outside. We wrapped them in plastic and carried them outside. At 2am. Felt like we were carrying out dead bodies! We didn't want the neighbors to know. We heavily treated his room. And left it alone for two weeks. He slept on an air mattress, the couch and in the spare room.
I let the hotel know what happened so that they could treat the room. They didn't respond to me. I found that rude, but I guess I understand...
He bought himself a new bed. We encased it in a bed bug proof cover. We threw out all of his old linen and got new stuff.
Now over a month later, I found them on me while I was sitting on the couch. I took a shower immediately, and sprayed the couch and the wall. We threw the couch out. I feel like the next place they will show up is my room since I am really the only one who sits on the couch to watch TV and always fall asleep. Then I get up and go to bed.
After my son's initial infestation, I treated my bed too. I have also been reading up on this since then. I thought I should spray my bed in case. To be honest, I really didn't believe things I was reading I thought people were over reacting. I think otherwise now. These things won't go away!
I encased my bed with the mattress cover and I check all the time. I bought traps to see if there is anything there.
Last night, I treated and rearranged the spare room and I think I found one, a baby, on my face afterwords. I showered immediately, and isolated my clothing. I took my clothes off in the shower!
I placed traps in the spare room and bought encasements for the bed there. I haven't gotten to put it on that bed yet. I am avoiding that room until I am done with other things. I don't want to spread it around. I have not had any bites in a long time. Not since the night I discovered the ones on the couch. That was about a week ago. And I got plastered. They were all over me. ugh. But they were babies, and I saw a couple bigger ones after I sprayed.
I am hoping I can keep these bugs at bay doing what I am doing. I bought a brand name product. It works great. It doesn't smell bad. It kills the bugs and the eggs. (according to the label). It is pet and kid safe. I have two cats. And grandkids. I have not had any sleep overs in a long time since I don't know where they are yet.
Does anyone know how long this will take? Oh what stress. Just when I thought it was over, they show up again. I want my life back.
Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.

Seems to me that you need to call a liscenced exterminator for sure. I'm no expert, but mang self treatments aren't thorough enough, and just cause the bugs migrate and subsequently multiply in new places. Throwing out furniture will do nothing except spread this public epidemic. I've been dealing with this for a couple months now. Praying you find closure soon 🙏

Chucklehead, thanks for the advice. I really cannot afford one right now. I want to try this if I can keep them at bay. I just wonder how long this is going to take.
When we threw the couch out, we treated it first. There were dead bugs all over it. I just didn't want to sit on it anymore. It kind of made me dislike the couch.
I am not sure there is any in the spare room. I am thinking that is the case. I have treated the entire room and set up traps to make sure. The bed in there is old and was given to me by someone else. Now I wonder if this is where it started. I didn't think about that. She had this in her attic for years. It is an old mattress. It isn't dirty and I don't see signs of anything on it. But it is degrading and the mattress itself is shedding. Time for a new one anyway. Before I go to encase this one, I think I will dispose of it and buy a new one.
I have set up traps to see if it detects any in my room and my son's room. I have ones set up in my spare room also.
Constantly I feel like something is crawling on my ankles. All day. I am sure I am freaking myself out.
My son doesn't really sit anywhere else in the house. He kind of uses my house as a place to sleep. He sleeps, showers and then goes to work. He did sleep on the couch the first couple of nights after he found them. I am thinking that is how they ended up there. The spare room is directly across from his room.
Anyway, it is treated for now. I will wait the two weeks and see what happens from there. For now, that room is off limits to grandkids. Until I know for sure. Sounds like it is going to be a long winter....

I know the creepy crawling feeling. After doing a self decontamination (lol), I stayed at a friends house for relief, and literally had dreams of bed bugs. This process has made it clear to me that these parasites do far more psychological damage than physical damage. And the physical damage is pretty bad lol.

It is definitely a never ending feeling of dread. Should I hug someone? Should I go to parties? I buy presents and don't bring them in the house, or I buy them the day of, just in case.
    Makes me wonder....

I have still managed to be social. Although I've only told my closest friends about the issue. They look at me like I'm the newly revealed dirty friend, but they understand especially after telling them my rituals before coming over/going out with them. I even traveled with a group of friends for a week to the beach and never had any issues. Before I leave the house, I throw whatever cloths I'm going to wear and my back pack (or my duffel bag in the case of the trip) into the dryer on high heat for 40 minutes. And I don't take out anything until the moment before I leave the house. None of my friends that were on the trip have had any signs of being contaminated, and when we were on the trip, I didn't receive any new bites at all.

    THAT BEING SAID:

I've read on here about people having infestations that stemmed from there cars. Something to think about if you are keeping presents in there!! Praying for relief for you 🙏
