Hi - I first started noticing groups of raised bites about week ago. Last night, I caught one of the offenders in a ziploc bag, and I do believe it's a bedbug.

So what do I do now? How do I get a confirmed identification? How do I avoid spreading bedbugs to my office, friends, et cetera? How do I find a reliable, qualified exterminator?

What are my landlord's obligations (and what is the best way to bring this up)? Am I at risk of eviction (I have lived in my current apt for almost 11 years)?

I looked at the bedbug registry and my current address is not listed.

Most of your questions depend on your location.... Local & State laws govern landlord - tenant responsibilities for pest control.

Read the FAQs to learn how to control the spread of bugs with regard to work & friends .... Look for a PCO that specializes in bed bug treatment or look on the NPMA website....

An experienced PCO can make the ID for you.... If you post a good macro shot here, we can help with the ID.....

Try to get the landlord to perform a building wide K9 search to identify the affected units.... Spot treatment will chase them around the building....

Let us know about your progress.......

If you're in NYC, M&M Pest Control on Orchard Street says you can bring a bug in for i.d.
They told me that on the phone when I was scouting around for advice.

Thanks. I am in NYC (uptown, on the west side) and will read the FAQs. Have been in the same apt for 11 years without an issue.

I don't know whether I somehow brought them in, or whether they've crept in from one of the neighbors' apartments, or how much it matters (aside from the approach that dictates to extermination).

OK, I called building management who had their regular exterminator call me directly. He will be coming by on Friday, but I have no idea whether he will be able to get into any (let alone all) of the apartments surrounding mine.

The exterminator reported that there is one other apartment in the building which has had an issue with bedbugs that he knows of. I don't know which apartment or whether it's one that abuts mine. The tenant is moving out, which the exterminator seems to think will be helpful in addressing the infestation there. I am highly skeptical.

He will be using a pesticide called Suspend SE. Is anyone familiar with this? Any thoughts on its efficacy?
