I moved in to this 2-bedroom apartment a month ago. During the first of week of my occupancy, I suffered numerous insect bites. I wake up with multiple bites all over my arms, legs and neck almost every day. I visited a doctor during the third week and he informed me that I was probably bitten by bedbugs. I did inspect thoroughly and found two adult bedbugs and some blood stains on my sheet. The funny thing is my roommate does not have any bites on her body at all. Unlike me, she has a good sleep every night. I lost sleep and missed 2 days of work since I moved here.

    My questions are:

    1) Is it possible for the bedbugs to stay exclusively in my room and not go to my roommate’s room?

    2) I heard so many things about bedbugs and how to treat them. Should I get a professional treatment or should I just treat it myself?

3)Do you know any reputable companies that service Queens area? Please recommend.

This forum is so informative. Thank you in advance.

From everything I've read here KillerQueen is the NYC master bed bug killer. I've not used him (my landlord won't pay for him) but he's extremely nice and helpful over the phone. You should PM him and he'll send you his phone number.

Also ssayles, I asked the same question, about whether or not I should self-treat, and people overwhelmingly said that it just doesn't go away on it's own, you need a pro. The difference here is that I caught a bug and mailed it off to the Harvard bug lab to be identified (and got it confirmed) whereas you just have mystery bites. I, by the way, haven't had bites. You probably need to figure out how to determine whether or not you actually HAVE bedbugs before you treat. Luckily you can have someone (like KillerQueen, above) come in and do an inspection to help on that front.

As for roommates: I live with three other people and none of them have any bites or have seen any bugs but I *definitely* have them in my bed.

If you haven't yet read the FAQs, I would start there. It's entirely possible that your roommate is being bitten. There's a lot we don't know conclusively about bed bugs, but we do know that many, many people (possibly as high as 60 or 70% of the population) doesn't react to bed bug bites.

If your roommate doesn't react, she might be getting bitten and just not knowing it.

Most of the veterans here will tell you: bed bugs make a lousy do it yourself project. They're a difficult pest to eradicate, and esp. if you're in a multi-unit building, a professional is the way to go because all adjacent units should be inspected. If you hire your own PCO and he or she treats your place, but the bugs are coming from above or below or next door, it won't matter because the bugs will come right back at you for another snack.

Read the FAQ on choosing a PCO. Killer Queen does get plenty of praise around these fora (I live 3000 miles away, so he was never an option for me), but if you're looking for other options that involve fewer chemicals, there are treatments that aren't cryonite that might be a better option.
