Bad news, I went on vacation and my roommate called to tell me the apartment has bed bugs.
I had some bites ( I thought were mosquitos) before I left, I even have periodically been looking for bed bugs since I am pretty paranoid as it is and it is becoming so common in nyc.

My landlord did not check my apartment but said there are enough apartments in the building that he is having the exterminator come but not until the 21st! they did give a list of instructions to prepare and seem pretty legit. (city pest services)

One of my worst fears is that I brought them with me on my trip, I haven't had any bites and once I found out I looked for them (staying with family) and I really do not want to have given them to them. I did warn them.

I really need advice on cleaning, since I am bring back all this stuff with me they may or may not be infested.

Also, since they exterminator isn't coming for around 10 days what I can do on my own to get as many bed bugs dead as possible. chemicals, natural stuff, I don't care I just want them dead.

    QUESTIONS:

-they don't want us to to put the mattress cover on until they get there (should I just buy and put on on now and in 10 days?)

-My vacuum doesn't have a bag, should I change the filter each time and clean it out with hot water and bleach?

re: mattress encasement. Looking back, I wish I had bought a cheap one to cover the bed before the pco came out. You can get them at Target. I bought the expensive ones and then had to take them off, wash them which messes them up entirely and then buy the cheap ones for after treatment. Reverse order. So buy the cheap ones and cover (I couldn't sleep on the bed without them), then buy the expensive ones for the longterm.

I'm in a single family house but I don't know how anyone lives without a Packtite. I would have the stuff you traveled with in a giant bag, order a packtite and then heat away..or if it's all clothes, put in hotwash and hot dryer.

I know how you feel..I worried that my sister and mother had gotten them from us but they haven't so there is hope. Hang in there...
