Need to move before fumigation--PLEASE HELP
(5 posts)-
My landlord will not fumigate the five apartment building that I live in. I am on Section 8, and yesterday I received a letter from him that he wants me out because he does not want to fumigate the whole building. When I called and gave them a bb I found, they brought me DE. The bb came from downstairs, a situation that was only spot treated, then decided to come up to my apartment. I cannot find the 'moving' section in the forums, so I can figure out what I am doing and do it. I will move, no doubt, and I plan on taking as little as possible. NO furniture, I would rather sleep on the floor than in a bb apt.
Can someone please tell me where I can find the moving section? Also, How do I take my stereo, tv, computer with me? I am disabled, 49 yrs old, single, and I have to do this on my own. I have no money for fumigation, nor vikane gas, or anything expensive. I want to do this safely, but low cost. Is that possible?! I am scared to death to bring one with me.
Any suggestions will be helpful. I am crying alot, and I need some support.
Thank YOU VERY MUCH!! -
In my own opinion, I would fight this if I were you.
Not only do you run the risk of bringing them with you when you move (risk, not certainty); but it doesn't sound quite right to me that he could evict you over bed bugs when he cannot prove how they came into the building in the first place.
If I were you I would check into the laws in your state and city and see what they say regarding pest control in a rental unit, and who is responsible for cost. What your landlord is doing feels very wrong to me.

Hi,
I second seeking legal advice as soon as possible. You may find out that the landlord can be forced to cover the costs of any remediation while you move and help in doing that sounds like it would be priceless.
If you don't know anyone who can help with the legal questions you may want to check in with Denise Donovan of the National Bed Bug Resource Authority (www.NBBRA.org). I know she has some regional legal connections who are willing to help where they can.
If it does come to the stage of having to move without assistance or treatment then I will help where I can but I do think your landlord can be made to realise the error of their ways quite easily.

I wanted to say thank you. I cannot get Legal Aid here in NY, because they have cut the funding for my county, along with 4 others, for housing problems.NY is a mess.
There is NO doubt the ll is responsible. This is a big, old house converted into 5 apartments. It is documented where they started, when Section 8 called and told him the apt. failed for habitability. Section 8 will not pay any of my rent past April because it is not liveable. The fact is the slum lord doesn't want to pay for treating the whole building, end of story. He and his ignorant wife say that treating my living room, (I have to do all the work), with DE is enough!!
I am now trying to get in contact with Denise Donavan, THANK YOU for giving me this lead, and this hotline number. The number has been busy for about 10 minutes now, (I wonder why)...not really. How can anyone force a ll to pay for something he is not willing to? I would love to have this place exterminated first, but it is not looking good, at all. When Section 8 gave him the ultimatum, that is when he decided he was going to make me leave. I guess if I don't live here, he can do as he pleases? I am hoping that Denise can help. I am so horrified, scared of being homeless. He tried to give me just 30 days, but Section 8 said he couldn't do that, that I do have until April 30...a little longer, but not much. I have lived here four years, very quiet, clean, always on time with rent, tenant. My previous landlord is MORE THAN willing to give me an outstanding tenant recommendation, I was with them for 7 years before I moved into the hell hole. I was living in a complex, and needed more room, and that is why I applied for Section 8 and moved in here. I rue the day I did.
I will keep you updated. Thank YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP. It means SO MUCH to me.

The landlord WILL NOT send in a professional. They tried to tell me they were coming in Monday and they were going to put DE ALL OVER my apartment, and that everything would be covered in this dust. I called the Department of Environmental Conservation, and got this stopped. It is illegal in NY for anyone that is NOT a professional to come and treat ANYTHING while there are people living here. The landlords DO NOT want to pay to have the whole building treated hence the eviction. I have already secured a new apt. which I will be moving into May 3. I have to take the landlord to small claims court to get money for all I am leaving behind, which is everything. He has stolen my whole life. I will have no furniture come move in time. I am disabled, so money is extremely tight. I do want to take some personal things with me, but I don't know what to do. Stereo, computer, (tv if I can, not that important), photos, Christmas ornaments from childhood forward, same with my photos. Paperwork...I have filing cabinet full. Should I just shred and throw them away? I have one box of memories from my Mom. Personal care items? What can I take and be safe? Dishes, cookware, basic nessessties, how do I prepare them? I am pretty lost. I do have a rental storage area to move all to after cleaning to await move. I desperately need help. Please be aware, that I am a single woman, alone, no help for this at all. I can get it done for the move, but it is going to take me longer than most. I don't have a choice. I need HELP. PLEASE.
