I think I need to identify something very tiny which has infested my apartment, probably in the mite category.

IF you wanted to be able to get a good look at something as tiny as a grain of pepper or flour, what magnification would you need?

Can you recommend the cheapest thing there is which would allow me to look at these things? I am aiming to collect what I need in order to then show it to an entomologist for help.

Also - is there a microscope that will also take a picture, or that allows the use of my regular digital camera with it, or does this take me into more expensive territory?

This bug-id-ing will be the only use to which this microscope is put!!

The PCO that was at my home had a small pocket magnifier which was pretty close up. He let me look through it. It was 10X magnification. Radio Shack sometimes has these and I saw them on line as well for under $10. Not a microscope but close enough to rule out some things. I picked one of these up myself for piece of mind. Hope this helped! Good luck!

I have had my good eye on the Veho VMS-001 for over a year now. It is kind of pricey, but it will tell you as much as you need to know about the mites and give you the ability to capture pictures.

FWIW, I've got the Celestron 44302 USB microscope (< $50 from Amazon). It has a real resolution of up to 1280x1024, but I often just use it at 640x480. Magnification up to 150x, but I'm not sure if that's good enough to ID mites.

You can try amazon.com and search for loupes. I often give them away at lectures: the 30x 21mm model is a good one and it's only around $3. Model depends on manufacturer with many being quite crisp for viewing, image quite clear even out at circumference of lens. I don't think it's really 30x, but it appears to be more than the 10x models. I also use a MiScope 2 connected to a laptop, that's at zarbeco.com. I have one fitted with white, IR, UV LEDs.

Bought a USB scope at ESA and it just arrived last week. 20-200X. Me, Lou and another BB researcher all were impressed enough to get one for mobility and field work.

Just arrived the day before I had to travel so no time to get insect shots. Software installed easily.
