Need advice - friend might have bedbugs(4 posts)
Hello everyone I am new to the site. I live in Philadelphia in a section 8 apartment building with about 200 apartments. I am very scared about bedbugs because many other section 8 buildings in this area have many infested apartments. Recently I visited a friend who lives on another floor. I spent about two hours in her apartment sitting on a large cloth recliner chair next to her bed. Later that day I visited someone in Pennsylvania Hospital. When I returned home and took off my jacket, I found a bedbug on my shirt. A web search identified it as a bedbug "nymph". So I figure I probably got it either at the hospital or at my friend's place. I spoke to my friend and asked her if she had seen any bedbugs but she claims she only sees an occassional "little German cockroach". I fear she may be seeing bedbugs and mistaking them for something else. I am really not sure what to do as she is a good friend and there is the possibility I got it from some where else, but I feel I do not want to go to her apartment anymore or have her come over to mine. However, I have seen reports on the web that people got bedbugs while at Pennsylvania Hospital so I can't be sure it came from my friend's apartment. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
At least you've been proactive in your BB education thus far.
If i had to venture a guess then the place where you sat or rested the longest might be the best guess for where you may have picked up a BB. However, where you may have placed your coat/jacket could also be a possibility as well.
In any case, you now need to determine if you have any BBs in your place and, if so, what your next course of action should be.
Have you sustained any bites that you know of?
Are you 100% certain that the bug you saw was indeed a bed bug?
While there may be a social stigma understandably attached to BBs, perhaps we need to keep lines of communication open such that we don't lose friendships and relationships needlessly due to just a bug.
Please advise of your questions and I'll do the best I can to reply in a timely fashion.
Hope this helps ! paul b.
Hi, thanks for your response. I have not seen any other bed bugs or sustained any bites that I know of. I have some of those sticky glue traps exterminators use so I put the bug on there, where he remains. The building exterminator is coming by this Friday morning and I will get his expert opinion as to whether or not this is truly a bed bug. Will keep everyone posted. As for my friend I think I will have to have a very sincere conversation with her before I decide what to do. I will show her pictures of bed bugs and maybe the actual one I have on the glue trap and ask her if that's what she has seen, and then I will go from there.
Good luck, speak carefully. If you guys are truly friends, this won't much matter in the big picture. pb
