Mystery Bug
(7 posts)-
Hi there, my wife was kind of freaked out when we found several of these odd bugs in the bed a few weeks ago. We were both worried that they would be bed bugs but I did some quick web research and determined that they were not bed bugs(i hope). We never find more than 6 or so at a time, and I just spent 10 minutes trying to find one(we killed a few last night) to photo for you guys. So, here is the photo...
... I took the photo next to a penny so you could get a size reference. Its not a terrible photo. The bug is hairy upon closer inspection( you can see it in the photo). The head of the bug is actually up against the penny. Any ideas??? I would really like to put my wife's mind to ease.

Carpet beetle larvae. Their hairs can cause skin reactions in some people.
They are not biting anyone.

Thanks for the super quick reply! I'll let my wife know that she can relax a little. We have 2 cats so I fear the food source for these little guys may never be eliminated. Oh well!

1. I have something similar in my house and will post pictures later, I have some at home.
2. I also have these symptoms -
a. feeling bitten on exposed skin, feet and ankles in particular, when I sit at my computer table at home. A few times - only - by using sticky tape, I found one of these things, as in the picture, on me when I felt a strong biting sensation. 99% of the time I can see nothing at all and there is nothing on the tape.
b. feeling these stings or bites elsewhere in apartment, usually on exposed ankles or feet.
So the symptoms match the symptoms reported by people who have or believe they have tiny bird mites. My question, is there any probably relationship between finding carpet beetle (or something like that) larvae, and these symptoms?
Or should I just regard them as two totally different things?
And - if you know someone in NY who can help me with this, please let me know.

an online petition urging congress to allow the use of DDT or something like it for the elimination of Bed Bugs
A perfect nonsense... BBs are resistant to DDT since last '40...

You have got to be kidding!
High levels of resistance to DDT has been demonstrated in bed bugs captured from different parts of the country in recent studies.
DDT won't work like it did in the 30s & 40s... You are wasting your time...
Modify your petition to request that the EPA classify bed bugs as a public health pest to fast track the relabeling of existing products & the introduction of any new products... if you want to be helpful.
