Mystery bite advice?(3 posts)
I've been a lurker on this site for a while now, but I'm having no luck figuring out by current situation and was hoping someone here could help.
I've had problems with bedbugs on and off in my apartment from Dec 2011 to April 2012. After many, many treatments, they seem to be defeated, at least for now. However, twice now which staying with my parents I've noticed mystery bites. The first time (which appeared early in a stay of several weeks) was a single bite on my wrist. The second, on a separate occasion, there was one bite on the fourth finger of my right hand and one roughly halfway between my elbow and shoulder.
All three of these bite look significantly different from the bed bug bites I had in the winter. After smaller bites for the first few weeks, the bed bug bites were almost always in clusters or lines and after some pink swelling around the bites would settle to dark pink, very defined circles that would last about a week. These three bites have been of similar size, by much less defined- they fade from quiet pink to quite pale- and have lessened dramatically over only a few days to small red dots. The one on my finger has turned a darker purple-pink and is more swollen than the other two, but I attribute that to the constant irritation of being right where the finger bends.
My reaction to bedbug bites worsened over time, and I've noticed my reactions to (very definite) mosquito bites are worse since experiencing bed bugs. Another issue is already sensitive skin, prone to breakouts etc during times of stress, which between these bites and my thesis this definitely qualifies as...
My bed at my parents house is right against the windows, which look out onto the porch roof. There are often dead insects on the window sill, and there was a cobweb as well during my last visit. I've inspected it thoroughly for bedbugs or traces of bugs and have found nothing, and in my apartment I've gotten pretty good at finding them. I've also been very careful about trying not to transfer bedbugs during trips to visit my parents and I've been told my infestation was very light.
So, intrepid bedbug experts! Any thoughts on what could have caused these? Or am I doomed to anxiously wait, having my parents inspect my room and hoping I don't get a bed-buggy cluster on my next visit home?
Thanks so much in advance. Just sharing this takes a major weight off...
I am no expert what so ever, but could this be caused from a mite??? I have been seriously investigating the cause of my bites, since we were cleared by a K-9 for bed bugs. We previously had birds nesting near our previous rental as well as a mice in the garage and one in the attic. Could their be a nearby nest of sorts?
Thanks- bird mites had crossed my mind, given that I am right over the porch roof.
I'm also considering mosquitoes as I tend to react badly to those and have spent time outside at dusk quite a bit lately. And, while I know there is no way to id a bug from its bite and reactions to bed bugs can change over time, these ones are much closer in appearance to my (again definite) mosquito bites.
Re: spiders: I know spider bites are much less common than reported, but does anyone know what "dry" or "medically not significant" spider bites look like? Based on my general sleeping potion, these bites have been localized to the arm and hand right that lies right by the cobweb on my windowsill. Could my presence after a long absence provoke the spider into biting?
