Got Bed Bugs? Bedbugger Forums » Introductions
my experience with DE
(6 posts)-
I felt compelled to at least add one thing I still hadnt read about DE. I have a perimeter line around where i sleep and have noticed great results so far, but more importantly, I caught adult bedbugs twice, put them on the floor near the dust, and within seconds their quickly moving legs gathered dust, slowed down, and they came to an immediate stop and died. I was frustrated not to find similar stories because its just a reminder of how some important helpful information is escaping us. Good luck everyone, Craig

Craig,
The jury is out on how long it can take to kill a bed bug with DE. What ever killed your bed bug .. was not the DE. If you read how DE works with regard to its killing action ... you will understand it takes time to work .... its not a contact kill. -
Was that food grade DE or the stuff with pyrethrins? Most reports on the board are that BB avoid large clumps and that it takes BB up to 10 days to die from DE exposure. Based on that, a BB will normally not batter-dip itself in DE as you just got yours to. Have fun experimenting.

A recent study, dropping BBs in to petri dishes filled with various dusts, DE did kill 100% but took 6-11 days to kill them. The fastest kill was <24 hours with a different product.
Maybe you had a pyrethrin plus DE product and your bugs were not only weakened by something else but are not pyrethrin resistant.
Read the tag of DE hazards and realize a ring of DE isn't a good idea. DE is an inhalation hazard alone and with added pesticide it is worse.

Thanks for input everyone. I am using an indoor insect killer called Results.....I think I've seen it referred to as Results DE on their website and it is definitely mixed with pyrethrins that with the dust (in a fairly thin layer, not clumped i might add) causes an immediate slow down and then a stop and then death.) The label does insinuate some bugs not dying immediately and taking the dust back to nesting areas and spreading the dust to other bugs and nymphs. I might be unwisely exposing myself to the dust, but nonetheless two healthy bugs walked their way into DE heaven.

I have some Diatect Results and just as a matter or reference I tossed a carpet beetle larvae in there and it was alive hours later but died overnight.
If your BBs died soon after exposure then you have a very susceptible population and that product will work very well for you.
Someone else may have bug with high resistance and that product will not work as well.
Taking captives in the war can tell you a lot.
