Got Bed Bugs? Bedbugger Forums » Uncategorized
my bird will be alone w/ the bbs
(14 posts)-
Hi All, I'm new to this site. I discovered bbs and had a PCO come about 3 weeks ago. I still have them. Will call the PCO again, upon my return after xmas (though he's not that good, unfortunately). My question for now is: my pet bird will be all alone here during my absence, will she get bitten? Yes she has a "tent" or "nest" with unfertilized eggs in there. Should I get rid of it before I go? (Precautions have been taken so that I do not spread my bbs to my family -we've read the faqs here and the forum posts).

I'm not sure how likely the bed bugs are to go after your bird if you're only gone for a few days. But if you're worried about it perhaps it would be possible to isolate the areas in which she spends time?

I heard somewhere about bed bugs going after pets including birds. Perhaps you can isolate your bird's cage much like people do with their beds (cans of soapy water/mineral oil on legs, double sided tape on ceiling above, etc).

Thank you! This info has helped. Like many others, I'm digusted and ashamed. To make matters worse, I live in an old apartment building and don't get along well with the management. So, going to them for help would prove futile, and at worst (probable) lead to eviction. Thanks for your helpful ideas.

bbinmontreal: Where in Montreal do you live, and what exterminator are you using?
-
Make sure your bird is not in your apartment during treatment. Birds do not take well to pesticides at all. Even after application I would not allow the bird in for 4 hours after treatment. Make sure

Thanks again y'all. Hi KQ, I've heard great things! My bird is not here when the PCO comes and I make sure I only pick her up a day or so afterward.
To SonYouBugginYo, I wouldn't advise using my PCO. I'm disappointed with his work. Though (only later) I contacted better PCOs, one impressed me over the phone, she gave a YEAR guarantee, her name is Debbie. I'm sorry I don't have more info, but if you google "exterminators in Montreal + Debbie" I believe you will find her.bbinmontreal

Debbie Expert.
What was the first company you got?

Parakeets had parakeets, and I believe they were poisoned during bed bug treatment and died. KillerQueen is right-- birds should not be home during treatment. I am not a pro and can't personally advise on how long they need to stay away.

Thanks Nobugsonme,
My bird was away for 2 days after the first treatment. I intend on keeping her away for about the same period when my PCO returns. Though, it's futile since he isn't any good. I've inquired and a reputable PCO charges double what I was charged. Anyway, I was reading another post when it hit me; I've had bbs for awhile now. Last summer, a friend told me a cluster of bites on my belly was due to a spider. That means they've been in my apartment (and probably neighbours' as well) for 6 months <<shudder>> Yet, none of my friends who've been here before December said anything!?
Yet I don't think I have a huge infestation. The PCO came Dec. 6th and didn't see anything and acted as if he were simply humoring us. He did not take off that thin mesh from the bottom of the box spring. He also only stayed about 20 minutes and focused his attention primary on the hard wood floor. I think it's time to save up and call the "good" PCO.

Yes, I can answer to this. My parakeets, and the other parakeets in our apartment building, all just "happened" to die after our building was treated for bedbugs. And, yes, when I was away from my apartment, my parakeets were bitten by bedbugs. The bedbugs preferred me, but would go after my beloved parakeets if I were away overnight for a night or two. I just felt so terrible about this that I took the name "parakeets" here. If I only could have defended them. They were so little, loving and helpless.
Even if the PCO tells you it is safe to bring your birds back, I would give it a much longer time. I waited longer than they said, but my birds still died. I'm sure it depends on the pesticide used, but environmentalists have long confirmed that birds are very sensitive to pesticides.

Parakeets,
I'm so sorry for the loss of your pets. It's appalling that they would give you wrong information as to how long the birds should be away. How could you tell that they were bitten in your absence?

I sent you a pm, bbinmontreal. It's just too sad to post here.
