My Bedbug story(4 posts)
My boyfriend and I came and looked at this apartment we are living in, I guess my boyfriend noticed some bugs in the window sill and asked the property manager what bugs they were, she said not to worry about it cause the had sprayed that apartment, (we didn't know it was bed bugs didn't know what they looked like) so we moved in on June 1, 2010. About a week or two later I started to get very itchy around my feet, ankles, legs, arms, and back. Well I wasn't sure at first what it was so I called my mom to tell her and she jokingly said "Maybe it's bed bugs" but I hadn't seen any bugs so I discarded that idea. One day I was laying down on my bed with my laptop when I happen to see a bug run across my bed very quickly, so I caught it in a cup and looked at it and looked it up on the internet. To my surprise it was a bed bug... So the bugs in the window sill my boyfriend had seen were bedbugs, it's unfortunate that we didn't know what bugs they were and we thought it was safe to move in cause the property manger told us that the suit had been sprayed. NOW after finding out we had these unpleasant and un-welcomed company we told the property manager and she said she would come up and spray our apartment we waited and waited and waited and waited and she never did come up, so then my boyfriend ran into her when coming home from work and she happened to be with the owner of our building, well then she went to her apartment and grabbed us a can of spray and said there you go spray yourself but if you are infested afterwards it your responsibility to get rid of them. So he brought up the spray and gave it to me... We also have 2 cats, so I was worried about spraying with the cats and I DONT KNOW HOW TO SPRAY.....neither does my boyfriend. So we never ended up spraying our apartment we called a Health inspector to come over and inspect. He comes up and takes a quick look around (we had actually caught about 20 bugs in a cup to prove we were infested with the bugs) showed that to him and all he said was "Yes you are infested with the Bed bugs, you will need to have your apartment treated"......... I was a little outraged because it's like NO DUH i just showed you my cup of bed bugs....arrrg sooooooooooo about 2 weeks after the inspector comes the property manger finally gave us a notice that looked as though a professional was coming in to spray our house with a list of stuff that we needed to do before they did.....well we did most of what we could do unfortunately because i'm not working we can't spend $100's of dollars washing and drying our clothes, so we bagged up everything all clothes, blankets, pillows, threw away our bed, we are going to throw away our couch (but if we had done that we'd be sleeping on the hard wood floor) So on Friday September 24th at 11 AM My property Manager and the Owner of the building show up to spray my apartment... I was kinda shocked, as I seriously thought a professional was coming in. So she went around and sprayed my apartment and then I was advised i needed to buy a vacuum (I have no carpets) because that will help get rid of them ?!?!?!?! Well right now my boyfriend and I are having trouble getting all our clothes washed and re-bagged into new bags so that we have clothes to wear..... So we can't afford a vacuum and because of the infestation I don't think I will be buying anything used... PLUS I HAVE THROWN AWAY MY BED AND AM THROWING AWAY MY COUCH AND HAVE NO MONEY TO BUY NEW STUFF................. Soon we will be going to buy an airmatress soon as that happens we'll probably throw the couch out.... I wish there was a law that say's that landlords should have to tell the tenant of bedbugs in the building before they move in!!!!!!!!!!! (I was told that the property manager and the owner were not aware that there was a problem..we've told them and other tenanats have told them, and I think they tried to blame us by stating that the person who lived here before us didn't complain...maybe they were infested but didn't react to the bites I know I did! ) I would wake up in the morning and seriously have anywhere from 20 - 50 bites alll over my body and boy an I itchy.... this is not cool not cool.
BTW I was wondering, if you move into a building that clearly knows they are infested and don't tell you is the landlord responsible for anything you throw out? Such as your bed and couch and maybe clothes?
Where do you live? It's possible the city you live in has ordinances or laws that require the landlord to use professionals for the spraying. If you post your location someone here may know the requirements (if any) for your particular city. Also, see if there is a tenants help association in your area.
So it's Tuesday at 1:30 AM and my boyfriend squished a bed bug running across the floor, boooooooo I hate Bed bugs
