I have quite a few guitars, hollow body and archtop, electric, etc. The cases are not a problem, but I want to be able to exterminate the guitars without making them toxic
to use. Has anyone had any experience using flea collars in guitars? I can't find any
with pyrithrin, but I'm looking for another chemical found in flea collars that might
kill BB's. Also thinking about silica powder. Don't want to use any powdered pyrithrin
that might become airborne and cause my lungs damage.
please help! -
I would be careful with silica or DE as they are desiccants and may not be in tune
with your guitars which must be gently weeping at the thought. Perhaps bagging them in large clear bags and watch. Heat would also be tricky because of the glue. -
Fast,
I wouldn't bother with the flea collars, they don't even work on fleas! If you can follow Winston's plan of watch(clear bags) and wait.If you see any, then you probably could contruct a mini fumigation chamber with the help of a pco, which you should be in contact with anyway if you have seen bb's in your apt. -
Thanks. Watch and wait...is that wait and wait and WAIT cuz if it's too long I'm afraid I may just want to give up playing--Well since bedbugs are my new hobby that might happen anyway. This has turned into a 24/7 project.

Hi F&F,
You can buy micro attachments for a vacuum cleaner that would probaly fit into the guitar.
Winston O, very clever... -
when moving, i cleaned my electric guitar with a soft brush and rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. having said that, the guitar is a gajillion years old, and not in the best shape anyway. it didn't seem to sustain any damage, but it might depend on the guitar.
while rubbing alcohol is a contact kill for bugs, i don't imagine it would do much to the eggs, if they were hidden in the cracks somewhere, so careful inspection (with the soft brush) would be key. not sure how alcohol would work with the hollow body acoustics, or if it might damage the wood... murphy's oil soap (which does come in a spray) is often recommended for wood, but i haven't personally tried this on a guitar. i imagine the hollow body guitars would be more difficult to inspect for eggs. perhaps you could carefully clean and inspect them, and then bag?

well...they are bagged and in a storage unit! My husband is gonna put tape over the hole of his acoustic and let them die a slow death. We shall see.
