I discovered I had a BB infestation last February, and my landlord promptly treated it. I thought I was BB-free until two weeks ago when I discovered more bugs. My lease is up the end of July, and I am moving out of my two bedroom as my roommate is leaving and into a studio. My landlord has offered another round of treatment in my current place, and I'm considering Vikane (sp?) during the moving process. I've already spent so much money on laundry, I'm looking for the most cost-effective way to solve this problem for good and make sure I don't take the bugs with me to my new apartment. I've also just started a new job and don't have a lot of time to do all the necessary cleaning for treatment. My current landlord has been really good about paying for treatment, but is there any way I can get them to pay for the laundering and moving treatment costs? I was unemployed for a few months, so finances are tight. Also, is there anyone in NYC that would lend me use of their Packtite?

good question about whether a landlord should pay for moving treatment costs, if you are moving because of the bugs. I'm in a similar situation, and am moving in a couple weeks. I cant afford vikane, and so have to just give up all of my furniture. This is a real bummer, but it would be worse if i brought them with me. I am not bringing anything with me that will not fit in a packtite.
In my case, when i moved in i asked the landlord if there had been any bedbug problems and he said no. I later found out that was a lie, as there were bedbugs reported to him next door to my apt. previously. If I had known, I NEVER would have moved in. Now its 2 years later, the apt next door still has a massive bedbug problem after multiple treatments, and I have to move out and give up all my stuff.

anyone have any info about this as a legal situation? I am in NYC as well, rent stabilized.

You know, surrounded, this is a paranthetical remark to your last sentence. Once you mentioned the words, "rent stabilized", bells began going off in my head. I live in a rent stabilized building that is heavily infested, and the landlord is going through the motions, and doing the bare minimum. The bbs remain even in the apartments that are heavily treated. Perhaps the landlord isn't trying very hard because he wants the people with rent stabilizd units to move out! He can always do a real bb clean up when he can charge everyone higher rents! It is not to the landlord's advantage to get rid of bbs in a building with many rent stabilized units. However, it is to his advantage to keep renting freshly empty units, until he can gradually bring them up to market rates with each new tenant. He actually likes a quick and constant turnover. That's why he lies about the bbs.
