monitoring a black leather sofa
(5 posts)-
having been treated after catching the infestation early, i'm monitoring regularly and so far so good. the beds are straightforward to check but i have a black leather sofa which is a nightmare because 1) it's black so any fecal stains are going to be nigh on impossible to spot 2) it's a sofa so there are loads of crevices that are impossible to look in.
does anyone have any ideas of a monitoring method? double sided tape won't really do because i can't put it anywhere where it's going to be effective and not stick to other stuff I don't want it to stick to. I'm probably answering my own question here regarding the impossibility of it, but you never know, so...

If the sofa has legs on it, maybe getting those "Climb up" interceptors to check for activity would be possible.

Good idea Paula
Dr McKnight should be giving us a commission :)
You can go over the surface of the couch with a vacuum cleaner hose stuffed with a nylon stocking capturing the debris just behind the nozzle. Dump the debris on a light colored background & check with a magnifying glass. Keep in mind that any bed bugs captured in the stocking may still be alive.

Hi,
The are less prone on hanging out in leather areas and yes visual inspection can be hard on dark surfaces.
I would suggest one of two things:
- Isolation trapping with something like the climbUP interceptors but this will only stop them getting from the floor to the sofa
- Monitoring with a passive bed bug bug detector which could be installed under the front edge of the sofa in such a way that no-one would even know its there
I have been working on something for later in the year for monitoring non bed items for signs and activity. Its a cute simple little solution.

I don't know that you can really monitor a sofa. I mean, if they are living in the MILLION cracks and crevices of a sofa (under the upholstery there is a wood frame, etc etc.) they would never need to leave. They just take short trip to bite you, and then back to the innards of the sofa they go.
