I try to avoid walking by mattresses in the street but sometimes I can't (like today, walking with a client and couldn't think of an excuse to cross street, took a peak at the seams too.). What would the risk be of picking up a bugger walking by close to one of these things, or I am just being real paranoid?

They move too slowly to worry about just walking by. If you were to stop and stand there then one might climb onto your shoe.

I surly had to stop for at least a few seconds to take that peek (just had too, don't know if my client noticed), but I'm sure thats still too short. Got me thinking, what do the garbage men who pick this stuff up do? Gotta be a risk. One more comment, if someone puts the mattress on the street and it has bbs, do they just go "on the move" right away? Seems to me that they would probably feel safe where they were, at least till they got hungry. I guess I am just wondering if all these people leaving mattress and furniture on the street is a problem too even if someone does not pick up the piece and bring it home. Sort of makes me think local gov't should have special disposal of such items, sort of like they do with a/c and refrigerators.

I've been doing the same thing when I see mattresses or sofas on the sidewalk. I make sure I keep my distance! It's kind of hard to do when you're walking 2 big dogs who want to examine it and pee on it though. LOL

Am i alone in assuming that every thrown out mattress/boxspring means it's definitely bedbugs? I leer at them suspiciously and veer away from them. People walking by must think I am crazy.

SO thank full We don't have to deal with that I have never seen a mattress on the curb where I live.. or even in the city limits..I think it is LAW you have to take it to the Landfill...And the trucks that do pick up smaller items have an arm on the trucks that pick the items up for the Garbage man..... Maybe they knew something I didn't...WE here have a very strict ordinance about keeping the eye sores to a min...
