Mattress Disposal Question
(10 posts)-
Hi all! 2nd treatment today and hopefully the last! The PCO stated that I was in dire need of a new mattress immediatly. With the encasement off the infestation in the matress is awful!! He thinks that they are getting through the encasement somehow, possibly a small hole. I wasnt able to have him go over it piece by piece with me as they were in the washer.
He checked the rest of the bed frame and head/foot boards theroughly and saw no signs which was the same results as my close checking so I am satisfied there. I have purchased the new mattresses and I have a friend picking them up after work with me. I am encasing the new mattress and box spring and I am also leaving on the original plastic that the mattress comes in. I hope this is enough to keep any bed bugs out of there!
I was told to encase the old mattresses and take them out of the house. This will prevent spreading any bed bugs as the infested ones are removed. Once they are outside I was told to remove the encasements and then wash and dry them. no problemo there!! The problem is I dont have anyone with a truck to help me get them to the dump before they close today. The dump is closed Thurs. and I dont think I can find a way to get them there until Sat. when I am off work. The infested mattresses will have to be left outside for a couple of days. In my area I am not worried about anyone stopping and taking them home but I will put them way off to the side out of view from any passers by just to be safe, and I will lable them bed bug infested for added piece of mind for myself. Are there any other precautions that I will need to take with the infested mattresses to ensure that no bugs find their way back into the home either mine or someone elses? I considered wrapping in plastic but where does one find plastic big enough for a mattress and box spring and is this necessary?

Thanks David! Seran wrap never thought of that!! I am guessing I will need quite a few packages of that!
David, do you thing that I should wrap in seran wrap in the infested room and remove to outside or should I encase, bring outside, remove encasements only after outside and then clean the encasements?
I would like to choose the option with the least risk of spreading while the infested matresses are being moved.
Edited to add that the encasements were already cleaned once today so I'm not worried that anything on them could be tracked

I prefer to deal in the 150% certainty so for me if its feasible I would:
Saran wrap in the room with the cover on and insert a warning label.
Carefully remove to the outside taking care not to damage the protective layers.
Leave it all outside and get a new encasement for the new mattress if you want. Although I don't see their value in treatment of bed bugs I actually think encasements are a good idea if you want to keep a new mattress clean and stain free.

Thanks! The encasements were almost $300 for both so buying new for the new mattresses is out of the question. I will pick up some seran tonight on the way home for wrapping and I have also notified my neighbor downstairs and told her to make sure the children know that the mattress are not out there to be jumped and frolicked on, they must stay away at all costs!

In which case, saran wrap , remove well away from the building.
Remove saran wrap, remove encasement. Seal casement in bin bag (garbage bag if you are in the US) and decon as soon as you can avoiding opening the bag for any length of time.
Re seal the mattress in saran wrap including appropriate warning labels.
Seal clothes in bin bag when just inside home and decon as soon as feasible.
Think about it for at least 15 minutes before you start and make sure everything you need is ready and available.

Done deal thank you! I refuse to be one of those ignorant people that improperly disposes of infested items!
After I get done the stock in seran wrap just may sky rocket sounds like I'm going to need a ton!!

Hi - It's probably too late, but the place where you are buying your new mattress & box spring - maybe they would sell extra large mattress sized bags. Who knows?

Hi,
You need approximately 100m to do a good job of sealing it.
It may be cheaper to get what we call pallet wrap or catering grade saran wrap.
I see the logic in the mattress bag idea but you cant seal them 100% is it fails on my 150% safe rule.

Mission accomplished. I was able to get the mattress and box spring sealed up nice and tight and outside away from the house over by the woods with the Bed Bug label of course attached. I feel confident that I did everything exactly as David advised. The new mattress and box spring are now in place with the plastic still on and the encasements also on for added protection. All bed linens were also washed in hot water and dried 2 hours in the hot dryer. Clothing worn during the disposal was immediately placed in the washer for a nice hot washing and I put on fresh clothes from my "clean" bag. The mattresses will be headed to the dump on Sat. when I have my day off
I was originally stressed out about having to spend money I did not have on new bedding tonight but I feel more hopeful right now than I have in a long time that I am finally on the right path to freedom. Piece of mind really is priceless and I am starting to see that light at the end of the tunnel.
Thank you very much for the advise on how to properly remove the infested items from my home I think tonight I will be getting a good nights sleep!!
