Male or Female?
(11 posts)-
My in-laws have bed bugs and since discovering this in July of last year, we have stopped going to their house. We spend time with them at our house (risky, I know) and outside of the house. We spent a great deal of time with them this past Sunday at an event. On Monday while giving my almost 2 year old a bath I discovered red welts on the outside of this leg. I had thought maybe a spider or mosquito had gotten in his pants while playing outside at daycare but today I found a bed bug crawling on his curtain. Needless to say, I am freaked out and angry that my in-laws have yet to correct what is by now a major infestation. From this picture, can you tell if this is male or female? I'm hopeful it's male and the only one that hitched a ride home, but I'm about to start a major search and cleaning expedition. I didn't find evidence of one on his sheets, in his pjs or on his crib mattress.

I didn't do an anonymous account at first so I went back and started over, sorry about that:

Hi,
I would say its female, if you scan the underside at high resolution we may be able to tell if it's mated.

I don't have a scanner at home and am hesitant to bring it to work to scan, can you tell anything from this photo of it's underside?

Sorry it needs to be a scanner for the resolution a picture is not detailed enough.

Obviously a female. Yes, as David noted, need a high scan to see trauma to the sternal area.

Thanks Lou, by the marvels of modern technology that was posted from the seafront on the south coast of England all via a phone. Its a wonder how they sent anyone to the moon without a tablet paddie PDA device and how they did not get lost without SatNav.

hi, I am obviously a newbie here - just opened a thread and learning more about bed bugs... Surprised to find this information about male/female... I remember last year a report on NPR where they pointed out that bed bugs were hermophrodites (sp?) - i.e., they could reproduce without mating... Is it possible that they can do all three or am i just going mad stuck on the bb subject today?...

They're not hermaphrodites. Males typically inseminate the females by piercing their bodies, the sperm travels where it's needed.
