Let's Hope This Isn't The Norm - Bob's Furniture Experience
(8 posts)-
I kept forgetting to share this experience I had at Bob's Furniture in Yonkers, NY last week. We were looking at mattresses (unrelated to bed bug problems, we are planning to get a new one in a few months just because ours is getting old) and the sales lady who was helping us kept mentioning this mattress cover they sell. Finally I asked about it, because we are going to have to get a cover of some sort for the new one when we get it. She told me that it's waterproof, stainproof, stops dust mites, etc...and that it also protects against bed bugs.
That caught my attention, so I looked at the brochure handout more carefully. It fits over the bed like a fitted sheet, it is NOT a full enclosure. "Are you sure this is good for bed bugs? It doesn't cover the whole bed." As she handed me a sample, she said, "Feel that, it's waterproof, there's no way bed bugs can get through that." At that point I just stopped before I started a fight with her. We took the brochure and sample and left the area. When I read through the brochure, they did mention everything else, waterproof, stains, dust mites...but not bed bugs. It doesn't mention it ANYWHERE.
I REALLY hope that this lady just added that bit to her own sales pitch and that the sales reps aren't actually trained to say that. That would be BAD NEWS for the bed-bug-suffering community if people really think covers like this do anything against bed bugs. I'm still considering emailing the company, I have the woman's business card so I can even mention her name specifically. Not only is it false advertising, but it could really get someone's hopes up, and the cover costs $99 I believe, not a cheap investment if you're really fighting these critters.
Just thought I'd share this with others, not only because Bob's is very popular in the NYC area, but because it also shows how misrepresentation of a product could lead to serious problems.

Apparently this is a common statement of theirs, I just happened across this thread (while reading other things unrelated): http://bedbugger.com/forum/topic/bobs-discount-furniture-selling-false-bb-covers
Plus now I'm not so sure about buying furniture from there either...

It would be great if someone could go in and get a photo of this and tell us the brand and model salespeople are misrepresenting in this way. It's pretty shocking.

i was going to recomment making a report about bob's to the Better Business Bureau but when i checked the Bureau's website i see that bob's has a "B" rating (is that for bbs?). Anyway, i can't see how bob's can possibly have a "B" rating with over 500 complaints about them for almost every kind of issue. Here is the report with complaints. click where it says bbb ratings.
by the way, i notice bob's webpage does not mention anything about mattress covers.
To tell you the truth, every time i see one of his commercials, i get all skeeved out. And he reminds me of that other rip off guy...Crazy Eddie....remember him?

Yeah, I tried to find it on the website as well so I could link it for you all. I threw away the handout and sample when I was cleaning out my car a few days ago. I will go back to the store and get a new one, it's close to my husband's job so I'm up there a lot.
Thanks for the link to the BBB, too bad I don't see anywhere to read the complaints. I found quite a few sites with complaints though, and several with bed bugs.
This is kind of a bummer though, we found a mattress and sofa we really liked, but now we are decidedly NOT buying from them. Raymour & Flanigan, here we come! (Goodbye, money...)

I went in today and got another handout so I could share it with everyone. Here are the scans:
No mentions of bed bugs, and you can see where it says it covers like a fitted sheet. I wanted to ask some of the sales guys if they also say it works for bed bugs, but I was too frustrated being in there, so I just grabbed the handout and left.

Water, mites and bedbugs cannot get through the cover. Just as the Germans could not get through the Maginot Line. Of course, they could just bypass it.
In a similar vein, consider how many people mistakenly believe that a cover will protect their entire homeā¦or that a product that "kills bedbugs" will fully solve their problem and eradicate all the bed bugs in their homes?

Yes, the saleswoman could hide behind the reasoning Ci states.
Moreover, consumers need to read packages.
And perhaps even more than that, we (concerned citizens, voters, government officials, etc.) need to work to make sure everyone knows what bed bugs are and what kinds of steps will help.
As long as 90%+ of people are clueless and underinformed, this kind of thing is an easy sell.
