Does anyone know that if a landlord finds out that you brought bedbugs in... do they have any legal recourse? I mean, it isn't your fault.. but other than insisting that you pay, can you be evicted?

Depends on where you live.
State & local laws can vary on who is responsible for pest control.
Where do you live?

new jersey

New Jersey laws are detailed in the FAQ section

But in NJ, it also matters which city you're in.

so, does anyone know for jersey city? i want to do the right thing here... and i plan to tell my landlord after my place is inspected, if i do, in fact, have bed bugs.

Kat - Unless you are the only tenant w/ the bugs I don't think there is any way to know definitively whether or not you brought the bugs. Even if you are the only one, I'm still not sure that it could be proven your fault beyond any doubt. In multi-unit housing there are a lot of variables.
When I was looking for the answers to these questions, I called my local health department. They were very nice & explained the ordinances to me.

There are thousands of variables in a large apartment building or complex, and who reports an infestation first is in absolutely no way an indicator of who introduced the pests. 50% of people don't even respond to the bites, then some people won't contact their landlord for that sort of thing, and on top of that they might make it into the wall on their first night out and attack a neighbor before any body in the unit that they first were introduced too.

But jersey City has a new ordinance as of 9/08: landlords must provide 2 professional bed bug treatments.
See this.I am not a big fan of this new law, since many times people need more than 2 treatments, and after the initial 2, the landlord can charge you. (However, I do not believe they can charge you for neighbors' treatment.) Still, if your landlord is refusing treatment, it is illegal.
