LOL... considering I live in Milano, it sounds really crazy to me...

That's not for Italy... mosquitoes winter in inner spaces of buildings, sometimes in homes, and they can bite in winter too. It's an adaptive behaviour that came out 10-15 years ago...

Thankfully the biscuits are cheaper than the city although this may not be the case if they don't fix the political problems in Italy soon.

Not so quickly my milano munching compatriot. But limited indoor populations can still exist so can not be ruled out completely although mostly. There is also an area on the upper west side which has a steam tunnel, catch basin issue where at least prior to the current snow fall was a culex reservoir which had found entrance into a few buildings. But for the most part as frequently so you are correct in pointing this out.

LOL, my girlfriend is Italian so I get to hear all about it. I will see if I can get her to arrange a trip for us to see you in 2011.

The weathermen (yes, they still seem to be men around here) claim it will be 50F in NYC by Friday, so perhaps we will have mosquitos again sooner rather than later.

There were similar populations in the upper East side areas years ago where Culex mosquitoes were also entering buildings. I even saw a large Con Edison tunnel system that had a chironomid midge and Tegenaria spider ecosystem way down underground. No mosquitoes there, however. There were also large chaoborid midge emergences on the upper East side areas of the city over the past few years. Typically misidentified as mosquito emergences. Chaoborid larvae are predators of mosquito larvae. There was a unique drainage system in one building I looked at where the pipes had cracked between floors and the breeding mosquitoes flew into the office space. Of course, hibernating mosquitoes can be in offices and apartments over the winter, too, and become active during their stay.
