KillerQueen on Good Morning America 11/15/10
(22 posts)-
Just wanted to give people a heads up for those interested. Monday the 15th, I'll be on Good Morning America (Monday ~ 11/15/10).
After talking with the NY Times the other day and providing a lot of good info for the article, I wished it had a bit more truth and bite into the facts I provided, sadly it did not. I was told it was edited to death ... because even the NY Times was nervous about being sued for telling the truth. Sad, sad world we live in when all they try to do is provide honest criticism.
I hope this hits home for more people out there & I hope the editing desk does not rip it apart.

I can't wait to watch it...
just to remind people who are not normally Good morning America watchers (like myself --i'm usually listening to Howard at that time) the show is on at
7am on ABC -- that's channel 7. -
Wish I was going to be home tomorrow morning! My husband's company was on GMA last week, as part of a contest called, "Work with me". You should have entered that contest, KillerQueen. George Stephanopoulous spent a day on the job with all the winners. Think what YOU could have showed him.

Thanks for the heads up! Looking forward to it.

Just set my alarm clock to wake up to watch!
-
Good luck and from my experience, short sweet and focus on the holy trinity of detection:
- Live samples
- Cast skins
- Faecal traces
If its a good one I will put you up for one of those buggies awards they are talking about in Jan 2011.

I saw KQ on TV...he looks great on the small screen!
too bad they didn't talk to him more. I would have preferred to hear more from KQ and see less of the doggies.

Do we have a link to the online version yet?
David

Yes, saw it online. But you see it comes down to the proper training and retraining and trainers and handlers placing hides (possibly in gloved hands) in many different places because the bugs are not always going to be at the dog shoulder level or on the ground level. Of course, most importantly, the handler or a 2nd person should be doing a visual verification of the canine alert. Check with the K9 team when you call. If they don't offer a visual verification of K9 alert, don't hire them. Call someone else. Visual verification of items such as internal areas of mattresses will not include destructive (cutting open) sampling.

What a pathetic waste of my time! 3 days ago the pen of a NY times reporter was silenced from the truth because of threats of lawsuits. Who loses ... you the misinformed.
This is just shocking to me to say the least. They told me they want to open this story up and report the facts ... yeah right! I sat across from the news correspondent for 10 minutes firing Q&A with good solid advice and facts. What does it get edited down to ... 5 words of something I said.
My old client even had a lot of good info for people out there and she didn't even get a single word aired. Amazing, simply amazing to me. They told me they wanted to report just how bad the K9 problem is becoming in NY. The times reporter had 10 or more emails with me, who knows how much time on the phone, and references from about 7 of my clients who spent anywhere from $2,000 - $12,000 and didn't ever have a bed bug problem.. That article was just about as pointless as GMA.
Moving forward ... I'll keep it word of mouth for people willing to be educated. Those who want to dive in and get ripped off will learn the hard way because I'm done trying to play robin hood with the media .. they are nothing more then a waste of my time. I have nothing to gain by telling what I see day in and day out. I'm an army of 1 and I don't want any more work then I get now .. so why the hell would somebody go against whats popular and try and help people from spending thousands of dollars for nothing? These people can buy a used car, take a vacation, or start a savings account for their kids future.
Just one mans opinion ... bye bye media

Sorry it was so frustrating...it was good to actually see your face though.

Yes, sorry it was so difficult for you, KillerQueen. There was one article, and I am not sure what you think about it, but it talks about how to go about apartment hunting and was in the "New York Daily News." I thought that article was one of the best articles that I have seen in a while about bed bugs. What do you think about it, KillerQueen? Did they misrepresent you?
Here it is: http://www.nydailynews.com/real_estate/2010/10/01/2010-10-01_bug_out_with_bedbugs_infesting_the_city_heres_how_to_avoid_them_when_home_huntin.html -
Sorry KQ, I know it must be frustrating. I was glad to see your face though.
You're the best!!

The problem with the "Roscoe" test was they weren't really testing the problem at all -- i.e. false positives. All they tested was that Roscoe could detect a bed bug if a bed bug was present right in front of his nose. To test for false positives, they need to put the dog in real world settings, some of which have no bed bugs.
BTW while I understand KQ's frustration, at least the false positive message is getting out and they did pick a quite powerful quote -- (to paraphrase) that 95% of the time he follows the dogs hits, not bed bugs are found.

KillerQueen, it was good to see a face and hear a voice to go with your screen name, but I don't blame you for being annoyed with the media. They always know how they are going to slant their piece before they even go out to investigate, IMO. Ever wonder why there's no article on bed bugs in the NY Times Sunday Travel section?!? So that family had rodent mites? How'd they finally get rid of them? If they mentioned how in that piece, it was glossed over so quickly, I missed it!
-
KQ, thank you for speaking the truth, even if the media watered it down to "Wook at the cute wittle puppy wif the facebook fan page!"
LOL... life isn't easy for the thinkers when wisdom is valued less than entertainment.
-
keeping fighting the fight KQ! Any chance you are coming to Denver for the NPMA bed bug meeting in Jan? Let me know so I'll be on guard, can't have you sneak up on me twice.
-
I once gave a 45 minute interview to NPR's All Things Considered.... which broadcast about 15 seconds of the discussion.
Another time, I drove over 200 miles to Miami and spent 3 1/2 hours with a Today Show crew to get another 20 seconds of fame.
I don't know what to call the digital equivalent of the editing room floor, but I am sure that we have lots of good company there.

Thanks guys!
Richard you are correct! Having a dog point to a wheel is a controlled test and not all all real world.
I'll be the first to say that a trained K9 can do this. I know the dogs go through a lot of training and are effective right out of the gate. Aside from the food reward I don't really see a problem with the system of training. My problem is with the handler and how the dog goes off target once its in the hands of somebody other then the trainer. I'm not going to get too deep into it, I was pissed that the show missed the mark on education ... and didn't give any insight into what my clients learned from this horror. When my clients called me (the silver's) their story rang a BELL with me ... and I knew they were victims of a false positive.
It's sad that the sound and camera crew thanked me because of what they learned while talking with me off camera. But the point was for the public to know this ... not just them.
But as always ~ real world vs controlled is where the problem is, something somebody still hasn't reported accurately. When my web site goes live I'll have video of several K9 teams inspecting homes that don't have bugs in them ..... then people will see the nonsense.
PS. I'm the baseboard jockey that got rid of the mites ... just don't tell anyone! I had 17 calls for mite treatments after the NY Times & GMA thing. The only reason I did the silver's treatment was because they didn't know who to trust for the rather simple job.

Just one mans opinion ... bye bye mediaI'm so sorry. I didn't even look at it, but I know media. I write. I'll practically do a Pullitzer of a story and after my editor does what she feels she needs to do I don't want to leave my house without a burka. Actually I'm writing less because of it--a lot less.
I warned David about this too. At best, it'll get your phone to ring more, if that is one of one's objectives.
Again, I'm sorry. And again I didn't watch it, but I don't need to to feel your pain.
