Just found bed bugs- and I'm moving in a week
(1 post)-
Hi. I'm new here and was hoping to get some advice. Two days ago I woke up with a bunch of small bug bites on my hands and legs. Thinking they were probably fleas (my housemate has 2 dogs, and they like to sleep on my bed) I washed all of my bed linens. This morning I discovered new bug bites, which made me suspicious that I was dealing with a nastier problem. When I got home from work I checked under my mattress and sure enough I found what looks like the shedded shells of 2 bed bugs.
Now, I'm in sort of a weird situation. I'm moving in with my boyfriend in less than a week. He's bringing his own bed and I was planning on getting rid of mine (it's super old). So as soon as I saw the bed bugs I decided to trash the bed and box spring (no bed frame or headboard- such is the life of a graduate student). They're not out in my yard and my landlord is going to take them to the dump tomorrow.
I've started going through all of my clothes and washing them on hot and then drying them on high for at least and hour and then sealing them in ziplock bags. I also vacuumed my room like it has never been vacuumed before (it's got wall-to-wall carpet, unfortunately). I plan on sleeping on my air mattress for the rest of my stay in this apartment. Besides the two molted shells I have found no other evidence of bed bugs (I took off the bottom of my box spring and looked in there- nothing that I could see- and looked through carpets, under furniture, etc). So far my housemate hasn't found any evidence of bugs in her room.
So I guess my question is- how much more do you think I need to do? Obviously I don't want to transfer the bugs to my new place. Most of my stuff like books and winter clothes have already been moved out. I hope this is a recent infestation and hasn't been lurking somewhere for months, otherwise my new place is already infested. I am extremely prone to bug bites though, so I sort of doubt that these guys have been around for too long without me noticing.
I have a few items still in my apartment that seem like they could harbor bed bugs, but can't be washed. My extensive (and expensive) yarn stash, for one (all you fellow knitters out there know how important your stash is). I simply cannot afford to buy a packtite, so I'm not sure what to do about this.
I'd appreciate any advice on moving, detecting the extent of an infestation, and cheap solutions.
Thanks so much!
