Isolated bed last night but still got bit? Could cpap be problem?
(12 posts)-
Hi. Thanks so much for everyone's support. We have been dealing with this for 2 weeks. I finally took our bed to the dump yesterday, and put our guest bed in our room. I double encased the mattress and box springs, steam cleaned the rails, and put the rail ends in cups of mineral oil. I also dusted DE around the cups on the floor. After showering, we got immediately in bed. We woke up at 3 am getting bit. I am so disappointed and don't know what we did wrong. One thing is my husband wears a cpap for sleep apnea. Could they be accessing our bed this way? The tubing does not touch the floor, but goes from night stand to his face mask. Thank you all again.

Hi Lynne,
I'm so sorry. Did you actually find a bug in the bed or have a new bite? If it was a bug, you will have to make sure all encasements are sealed, rewash bedding, etc. What about your pillows? If they were on old bed, toss them and buy new ones.If it was just bites you found, rememmber that some bites don't show up for 24 hours or even up to 9 days later. It is possible these bites were from a few days ago. Was there bedbug poop on the sheets or any blood smears? If not, then likely they are bites from a couple days ago.
The cpap could be an issue. What you could do is put vaseline on the airtube that runs from machine to face. Even if the machine was infested (you could treat it by blowing out with canned air and maybe storing a couple of days in sealed bag with mothballs. (I'm not sure of mothball time period you would need to search on this site)
I think I would put either vaseline around the machine itself or put down painters tape around your machine and put double sided sticky tape on the painters tape (this will keep you from running your nightstand) and then put a vaseline ring around the outside tubing so they can't use that to climb to bed. Check the mask over thoroughly and submerge in water if you see any sign of bed bugs in mask.Hang in there!

Thank you! Great suggestions. Will do the vasoline tonight. I just looked under the bed and the box springs cover we put on last night was touching the floor in the middle. So I guess they could have climbed up from there. Now I am wondering if i need to buy more covers and start over since these are contaminated. What do you think? Thank you again.

lynne, your covers are not contaminated in that you need to buy new ones. See if you can not vacuum the air out of the bottom cover, I know exactly what you are talking about with a giant air bubble touching the ground underneath.
I would put your bed on risers, the extra height keeps blankets etc from accidently touching the floor giving them a lift up.
If you actually had a bbug in bed with you, you might need to recheck the frames, etc.
I personally would vacuum it, spray sterifab or bedlam around the box springs and really check it over. Definitely run the linens back through the dryer and see if tonight doesn't go better.Hang in there, there is a real learning curve to this thing...

You're very alert to think of the cpap. You are catching on very quickly and will be an amazing bedbug warrior (good answers here from people, too).
ANYTHING that you bring to bed when bedbugs bite you during the night could end up having bedbugs in it. I've heard people here finding bedbugs in the spines of books they read in bed, in the remote control clickers they have in their beds to turn the tv off before they fall asleep, in the alarm clock next to the bed, in a stuffed animal ... we have to outwit the bedbugs by using our intelligence. Sometimes I forget we are so much smarter than bedbugs. Bedbugs are totally dumb and programmed to feed on blood and procreate. Period. Look at the size of their putrid brains. You are stupid, you puny bedbugs. We will win.

Looks like in only a couple of days we went from facing a complete takeover by bedbugs and now you are thinking we can conquer them. Hope you are right this time around...

Hi Lynee82 - I saw your mention of a CPAP for sleep apnea. I am curious. I am not sure how they work, but I understand they improve the sleeper's airflow with a mask and assisted air intake.
Bedbugs are drawn to CO2 exhalations and warmth. Does the CPAP redirect your spouse's exhaled CO2? If it redirects the CO2 to the machine on the nightstand maybe the warmth of the electonics and the exhalations draw the bedbugs to the unit.

He breathes in filtered air through the tube, and breathes out through the mask on his face. So the CO2 is still near his face. Thank you for helping me to think this through. I think the tubing could be a link to the bed. I will try the vasoline tonight on the tube. If I could just sleep without fear and bites, I think I could deal with this so much better.

Why are you being so hard on Parakeets? I think that Keets is just being realistic in all this and telling it like it is, whether positive or negative. Keets reads and replies on the issue going on at that time. Also, maybe Keets was having an "off" day and now Keets is not. Don't forget, emotions go up and down with these bloodsuckers. We should be attacking bedbugs and not each other or our comments.
