Got Bed Bugs? Bedbugger Forums » General Topics
Is this a bed bug? Please help I'm dying over here !!,
(17 posts)-
So I committed what is probably a sin around here and bought a used bed frame. I asked the girl I bought it from if she had any issues with bed bugs. She said she, nor her roommates, have not. I left the bed frame, dismantled, outside over night. I still have not brought it inside, as I want to completely inspect, clean it, and make sure it's clear of anything.
Well I was securing the wooden bed slats with a bag when I decided to shine a flashlight down the posts when I saw this:
It's dark outside and it was bit far down so it was hard to tell. But my dad looked at it and bedbug wad the first thing that came to mind. Please help!

Hmmm... it does look like a bedbug. It's difficult to say for sure, because I could only zoom in so close. However, I am by no means an expert, so take this with a grain of salt. Luckily you have not brought this inside! Leave it out, by all means!

Inconclusive but I doubt it. Zooming in close it doesn't scream BB.
By all means leave it outside but corral that bug for a better pic and ID.

Glad an expert chimed in and I am wrong!

Thanks so much for the replies. I am still really scared. I think I'm just going to toss it.
My dad sprayed some chemical thing (for wasps and roaches.... Something along that line) down the post. He said it will kill it and then we can have a better look in the a.m. I forgot to mention he saw another one of those things in another bed post....
I'm freaking out since we brought it home in our car. Is there anything we can do to treat the car?

DO NOT TOSS THE SAMPLES!
You need positive ID before planning anything so you are acting on facts and not fears.
Get a magnifying glass and look at the antennea. If they are not 4 segmented ( actually looks more like 3) they are not BBs.
It appeared to have clubbed antennae zoomed in.

Before you panic, I would have the bug confirmed first. Try posting a photo on here of the bug. The experts here are great and someone should be able to identify it for you. Once you know what you're dealing with, then you can figure out what steps, if any, need to be taken.

I meant to say a close-up photo...

Whereabouts in the car was the frame? In a trunk? Or the backseat?
-
Oh I definitely plan to have a positive id of it. I will get a closer pic.
What does that mean clubbed antenna? Sorry, I am absolutely new to all this and have never had to deal with is before.
As for my car it is an SUV which allows for the seats to fold into the floor. So it was in the backseat area, pushed up against the front unfolded seats.

Many beetles and other insects have clubbed antennae. Some sort of nub on the end. Sort of like a golf club. Clubbed means not a BB.
BBs have a 4 piece tapered antennae.
Also look for a split down the center of the back. Google elytra for examples. Anything with that is not a BB.

Ok I understand now. Thank you so much for breaking it down for me. Will keep all this in mind when I have look in the a.m. I am praying that it is not.
I wonder what to do with my car in the mean time...
-
In my opinion, it's a beetle,,, probably a Dermestid one...

EffeCi is one of the real experts. He is an entomologist and has forgotten more about bugs than I know.
So you can breath even easier now. However do get a better pic to get a definite answer.

Thank you guys so much for you replies. You've helped put my mind at ease.
Today my dad reinspected the bed frame and caught the dead bugs. He said they were beetles and not bed bugs. I took a closer picture here:
What do you guys think?

I apologize. Here is a working link:

Most definitely not a bed bug, not even in the same order. Beetle. Breathe deep relax :).
Disclosure, I make packtite and have seen thousands of bed bugs.
