I couldn't find this on any search engines so I am curious if there is such a thing as a sturdy sealed encasement to go around an entire couch? We are moving soon and still have a fairly new $800 couch that is too big for our 18 month BB-storage unit. It would be a shame to have to junk it but it sure is sounding like we may have to. I am mulling over the idea of encasing it in a ton of giant plastic wrap, and then covering that in turn for the move with a ton of heavy moving wrap to prevent tears- but the plastic wrap idea leaves the possibility of them working their way through the cracks.... though you'd figure it should be possible to wrap it super tight and multi-layered like a mummy.

It's possible, but definitely up to your own risk tolerance (especially if you want to use the couch within the next year-or-so...) See the recent post titled "Hello All..It's been awhile....new name", for an example.

Hello there. We did exactly what you are thinking of doing and it worked for us. I can't say it will work for others but I personally think it's worth a shot. We got 6 mil plastic from Home Depot and rolls upon rolls of Gorilla tape. We took the cushions off and wrapped the furniture as if we were redoing the fabric. We wrapped it a little loose for movement when someone sat down. We taped everything! All the seams....everything! If you layer the plastic and tape every seam...I think your covering all areas that the pesky critters can escape. We made sure to routinely check the seams and retape often. We moved one month after finding out we had BBS and after 4 treatments. Mostly steam and some type of pesticide that Orkin left down. I'm not sure how bad our infestation was but in my opinion if you have ONE you have a serious problem. These things are worse than anything I've encountered or read about.

DO NOT rely on wrapping your furniture only. I would continue to get treatments to be on the safe side. Good luck in your battle! I know how you feel.

It would be tricky and you would have a hard time being certain there were no gaps that were not airtight. And I don't think you'd be able to use it while it was wrapped -- not if you wanted to try and ensure a seal was not compromised.

Thanks, everyone. Based on the impracticality/uncertaintly of encasing such an irregularly shaped thing, but heartbroken to part with something so expensive and new, we are going to squeeze it into our 18 month (or possibly even two year) storage, and even then only after wrapping it up mummy-like, and even then spraying it like crazy and then steaming it after we go to collect it in two years. Nuts.

Mattress Safe can make encasements of any dimension and size. Just give them a call with the measurements for the couch.

You could also try calling Protect-A-Bed as they may also do custom sizes.

    Sincerely,

    Sean.

    Sean,

    That is useful to know.

But if a sofa is fully encased (I am assuming we aren't just talking about encasing a cushion or two but that this would mean one cover over the cushions, legs, etc.), it seems like this would be hard to keep the encasement from tearing. Especially if the item was moved as described, but even if it just sat in the room and was used for a while.

However, I am having trouble imagining this, so maybe I am envisioning the wrong kind of encasement entirely!

Ooooooh. I'm currently using a (much too large) queen-sized encasement on my double papasan cushion (with a custom fabric cover over it). I'd love to get a custom-made encasement for that... I wonder if they're expensive? I will have to call them and find out.

Since Karen has posted only four times to this website and each ad was an advertisement for a product, her posts are being treated as spam. There is evidence she may be connected with the company who manufactures this product.

I did leave one of Karen's posts up in another thread, with this response from me.

You may respond on that thread, where Karen's suggestion stands, but please do not discuss her suggestion here or on other threads where it has been deleted. It's easier if the conversation is in one place.

AFAIK, an encasement is coated fabric sewn together with tight stitches (prehaps sealed seams) and a tight zipper (with that extra pocket), perhaps taped shut, too. Any of us can get these pieces and have a tailor make it up for us in any color, shape, size.

A year ago, there was no Paktite, no Climb-ups, no CDC3000, no NightWatch. These things happened because someone like you or me went out on a limb and made it happen.

My gut feeling was that whatever she recommended can be lightly trusted which was why I asked her for elaboration. Thanks for identifying this for all of us and taking care of it so promptly.

Cilecto: good point! We are spoiled. :(
