Does it really cost $5,000 to treat a NYC 1 bedroom? Apartment is approx. 700 sq. ft. We want to treat ASAP, but am concerned we are being price-gouged by potential exterminator? It just seems like a HUGE amount of money....

I'm sure pricing varies depending on each particular situation, but we have an 800+ sq. ft. apt. and nobody I spoke to wanted that much. The highest quote I came across was half that.

Thank you- price just seemed really excessive to us. Are you allowed to tell me who you used or got quotes from or does that violate the rules for this forum?

It would also depend on what kind of treatment we're talking about. $5000 for 750 square feet sounds high to me, but that also depends on exactly what the treatment is.

If that's to remove all your belongings, Vikane them offsite, and heat treat the structure in a location that is difficult to reach because of its placement in the building, and that comes with a one year warranty and includes high quality encasements, then that might be a reasonable price for *that* treatment.

I'm assuming that's not the treatment you're talking about.

Have you looked at the FAQ on choosing a PCO? Because it sounds a little to me like that might be an example of a price that a PCO sets when the PCO doesn't want to deal with bed bugs.

I don't know, but I know who I would go with if I had the option to choose our own PCO. Our landlord is making us go with his choice and I am not happy at all. The person I wwould have liked to hire (you can look at my posts to find out or PM me) was not the least expensive or the most expensive, but he was the smartest and the most thorough. Most of all in every interaction he has been honest, on time, and very generous. He has not been able to treat our apartment, but I'm convinced that he could have he would have already long ago fixed our problem.

I got an estimate (not a quote because it was just over the phone) for $1600 for a 450 sf in the S.F. Bay area of California for heat treatment.

With the exception of thermal remediation or fumigation, the price does indeed sound quite high all things being equal.

    Thanks, Winston.

I know there's some geographical variation to prices, and my own heat treatment was three years ago, in a region where it's been more common for a longer time (albeit not for bed bugs), so I wasn't sure if that quote was as off as it seemed to me.
