    Hello,

I too live in the Bronx and have bedbugs. I've been reading through the boards for tips and support and have noticed that a lot of the infestations have been in the Bronx. Could this be a sign? I remember reading in my research that, a few years ago, when the bedbug infestation was at it's heights in NYC that they weren't in the Bronx as much as queens or manhattan. Could this be a recent change?

    rightlegravaged,

Bed bugs were a problem in the Bronx in those days too.

The statistics you're referring to are those from the city -- statistics based on people calling 311 to report bed bugs (i.e. a "complaint") and some of those complaints resulting in an inspector declaring the rented unit to have bed bugs (at which point an "HPD violation" can be issued).

Additional statistics arise from the NYCHA buildings (which are tallied separately, as NYCHA tenants call their management offices, not 311, to report bed bugs).

The statistics do not account for the following groups of people:
Homeowners (whether they live in a house or a coop/condo)
Tenants who only report bed bugs directly to their landlords, and who do not call 311 (or NYCHA, if in public housing).

Many fear to make a formal HPD complaint because they feel they may suffer reprisals. They may fear being evicted (if they do not have a lease) or may fear they won't get a reference from the landlord if they want to move, or even that the landlord might add them to some tenant blacklist for landlords.

People who are not hooked up to the internet may not know to call 311.
People who do not speak English may not know to call 311 or may have trouble doing so.
New immigrants may be especially fearful of taking action, or may not know what to do.

I gather that most people in NYC on the forums don't call 311 to report bed bugs. I can only assume the same is true of most people outside of the forums. So I would take those statistics with a grain of salt.
