in NYC: i thought these were bedbugs, but they aren't
(8 posts)-
thought these were bedbugs at first, because they are almost exclusively on my bed. but they fly, so i know they aren't bedbugs. but what are they? they mostly come around when i am not near the bed. i came home from dinner a while ago and i found 16 of them running around my bed. when i am sleeping, they pretty much vacate the area. they don't bite and they aren't interested in my food--there are none in the kitchen or in eating area.
here are pictures. any ideas??

They kind of remind me of June bugs or some other type of beetle.

Hi Providence,
I googled June bugs, and they actually look nothing like what google pulled up. Sorry that my photos aren't bigger....they really aren't beetle-looking. More like teensy roaches. But I do not think they are roaches....
I recently had a big leak and they had to scrape the walls and repaint. I am almost positive that the damp conditions and holes in the walls had something to do with this bug problem.

Probably a confused flour beetle.
Beetle for sure.

thanks jim. they are not interested in food and are not in the kitchen at all....they are only on my bed. according to wikipedia, flour beetles like grains.....

oh, another thing....wikepedia says confused flour beetles don't fly....and these do.

As you see in the other thread Sean gave you a better idea what that thing is. A picture sometimes isn't good enough to make a 100% ID of the subspecies but many times is clear enough to eliminate the possibility it is a BB. By the shape overall and the antennae yours was 100% not a BB but not being a true expert I couldn't tell what it was beyond a beetle species.
Sean's is an entomologist, his credentials speak for themselves and his word is golden.
Some of us old timers are keen enough to spot BB or not traits but are not in Sean's league of expertise.

It flies - just be thankful it isn't a bed bug because bed bugs don't fly.
