You're going to be hearing reports that there was a pretty substantial moderate earthquake that just hit southern California (8:39 pm PDT on Sunday 17 May).

Just wanted to check in and let people know that I'm fine. My cat is freaked out, but I am fine. It wasn't big enough that you should worry about Spideyjg since it was right about a 5.0 in initial reports, but given where it was, it's definitely the biggest and closest I've been through since I moved here, so I wanted to post lest people hear the news and freak out.

I have plenty of family back east, and therefore plenty of experience with national media reporting about the GIANT QUAKE OF DOOM IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA and then never getting around to reporting where exactly it is or only saying something like "Centered 2 miles east of Lennox, California" when no one outside of CA would know where that is. (Heck, I've lived here for like 14 years, and within 25 miles of Lennox, CA, and I didn't know where it was.)

So I had no idea what kinds of headlines y'all were going to wake up to.

And, yeah, Jim, it wasn't that big. Initial reports said 5.0, and then the USGS revised it down to 4.7. I figured you wouldn't have felt it, but if everyone here saw southern California, they'd think of the two of us.

I find, generally speaking, that many east coasters have a hard time wrapping their heads around the sheer scale of California's land mass. I'm not sure I did until I moved here. States on the east coast are so much smaller in terms of sheer size. But LA, esp. since I'm south of LA by a decent distance, and SD are closer than any other two major cities in California, but we're still at least 100 to 120 miles apart.

So seasoned earthquake country dwellers know that people 100+ miles apart won't get much of a jolt at all from a quake under 5.0, but outside of here, people would see headlines about quake in southern California and worry about you as much as me.
