Freaking out. My next door neighbor in Manhattan had a very serious infestation of bedbugs in Feb. 08. Her apartment is a major pigsty, she is kind of obese and elderly, and she did not do the meticulous prep work necessary to make sure the bugs were eradicated completely. My place was inspected and nothing was found, and I was not being bit at all. I bagged and washed all clothing, and the bordering wall was sprayed with residual just to be safe.
Then in June she told me that she was being bit again, but that she thinks now that the exterminators had not done a good job and she was going to deal with the prob herself. She showed me the white powdery stuff (after reading on here i think now that it was DE) that she had literally sprinkled an inch thick all over her apt, she threw away lots of furniture, etc. But she never vacuumed or really cleaned up all that much, the place was still a sty. In July I started to get bit. The last week in July I found a single bug. I decided to move. I found a new place, and spent August bagging, washing, packing, and had 3 treatments by the building's PCO. I was not bit after the second treatment, and was told I was allgood. My neighbor refused to be inspected again, as she claimed she was no longer being bit and that I must have brought them in from somewhere else. I decided to not freak out about this and just be grateful that I was moving away from this crazy person.

Well, I moved on Saturday (8-30) and woke up Sunday morning with a bite on my waist. Throughout the day 3 more popped up. One on my finger, that's the worst place IMO. Now to be fair there are no screens in the new apt, and I had the windows open all day and night because it was hot and stuffy. I saw a couple mosquitos in the place but BB bites are more intense and that's what these feel like. I'm afraid that my box spring or mattress encasements were compromised in the move and that is how they escaped, but I've been at work yesterday and today so haven't had a chance to inspect. I'll be doing that when I get home later tonight. Must buy powerful flashlight.

So in conclusion...FUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKK! I am so humiliated and embarassed to tell my new landlord and neighbors (I love the apartment, the building, the neighborhood, and was so excited to move there.) I'm afraid they will blame me. I'm afraid I will go broke from all the treatments. I'm fantasizing that these are mosquito bites. I'm afraid I am going to have a psychotic break! (Only halfway serious.)
Thanks for reading and any comments you all have I would appreciate.

Oh man - I am so sorry for you!! Damn! What bad luck! Feel free to click my username and check out my gorey details on my meltdown one week ago tonight on my topics. I am so frickin grateful for this website. Maybe PM one of the oldtimers - spidey and itchyscratchy are pretty savvy along with the webmaster, nobugsonme. You know what you have to do. Good luck. I'll follow your progress on the forum as I am up and down all night freaking out and turning on all the lights inspecting with my trusty magnifying glass. If we don't laugh we will cry and who knows when we'll stop. Best of luck.

Just reread my first post and just want to first apologize for my swearing (first time on here and not sure if that is offensive, hope not :) And also that by saying my neighbor was living in a pigsty, and "obese and elderly" I was not trying to say that these are the REASONS she got the bugs as I know it can happen to anyone - these are just the reasons that it was so impossible to eliminate the bugs from her place. I tried to help her bag stuff up, so did the PCO's to an extent. But she refused to throw things away and was reusing the plastic bags back and forth from the laundry, etc. Her physical condition makes it IMPOSSIBLE for her to do the work necessary to clean that place out and do a thorough treatment - it would take a crew of maybe 3 guys a couple days and a dumpster to get rid of all her crap. So I hope nobody took that the wrong way!

I am in New York and I am being attacked by misquitos.
I see the tiny flying misquitos, so i know that is what it is.
You need screens on your windows.
I hope that is all it is. Just stay in plastic as much as you can.
I moved and things are just stored in plastic. Its not so bad.
So if I get any bugs, I don't have to do much.
Every thing on the bed is white and i inspect often.
Vaccumm and use murphy's oil soap.

    Hey-
The same thing basically happened to me but I basically moved with nothing and had all my stuff treated by Vikane gas and I'm STILL trying to establish if it's bed bugs or if it's mosquitos.

I also had a total breakdown (over all the money I've spent on getting rid of bbs; somewhere with new furniture hovering around 7k) but you really can't let that happen. It's counter-productive.

I'm using a new PCO that suggests I do not bag and go about life fairly normally.. which helps because living out of plastic makes me go crazy.

I've also stopped counting bites that could potentially be mosquito bites (as an example, I was outside most of the day and night on saturday in a park and had 7 bites the following day, it's more likely their mosquito bites)

There also may be bbs in the place you moved into or in your moving truck which is potentially how I got them in the first place (I've been told that nearly HALF of all moving trucks in NYC have bed bugs).

What you should do is get screens asap. I still don't have screens on all of my windows. Most of the bites or "bites" i've gotten are on nights when I have had my windows open during the day because it just gets WAY too stuffy.

Well so far no bites have emerged from night 2 in the new place, but the bites that are there are definitely bright red and nasty, if they are mosquitos then Brooklyn has some seriously steroidal mosquitos...
Tomorrow I will wash wash wash, murphy's oil my dresser and bedframe, vacuum, maybe maybe buy some DE? Not sure about that one. Should probably buy new mattress & boxspring encasings too, but can't decide if I should order the ones recommended here (and wait for shipping) or go get vinyls at target tomorrow...I'll probably do both. How crazy is that?
Thanks for the supportive comments everyone, windows are closed up now it's a waiting game...

Best of luck to you satansbed (love your user name by the way!). Keep in mind that some people do have long delays when bites appear (as much as 9 days), so could it be possible you were bitten in your old place and the bites emerged afterward?

I've been living happily in my apartment for many years, and just a couple of months ago I began noticing mystery welts on my arms which worried me. I've turned my apartment upside down, and no evidence of anything. It is looking more and more like I may not have them, but I know how emotionally tough a waiting game can be : ( I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

Thanks for the username compliment doodlebug! I'm loving up pearl jam this summer and the name seemed appropriate. My skin is really itchy but I just can't tell at this point if I'm imagining it or if it's bites. Don't have any big welts in the old place, but saw something on here about nymph bites being smaller and not causing as big a reaction as mature bugs? Yesterday I was off work and I vacuumed a lot, took apart my bed again and inspected, found nothing. Murphy'd the frame and areas around my bed, I'll do more when I'm off Friday. probably will head up to Bway exterminaters for some DE and advice.
So I'm still on pins and needles, basically. I guess it will be that way for a long time...
(Still don't have screens, didn't have time to call super yet. Hot as heck with the windows closed but better than mysterious bites that freak me out!!)

This is quite possible. But if so, you know what you're looking for and how to fight. Perhaps you can nip it in the bud. Can you get some treatments now, in the new place? I'm thinking that if you brought a few along, you want to try and kill them before they reproduce or go anywhere.

I inspected the boxspring and mattress covers and found one small rip in the boxspring cover. :( Sealed it up with clear duct tape, and also sealed the zippers all the way around both covers. I haven't noticed anymore bites, my skin is definitely itchy though. Might be in my head. Think I'll buy new covers, put them over the old. The covers I have are good, and have been on since before any of this was a problem, I bought them for my dustmite allergy a long time ago. Can go to bway exterm tomorrow for some DE and maybe pesticide...of course I'd rather not sound the alarm in the new place with the super and neighbors for no reason. I can't find ANY evidence anywhere, and my previous infestation was very mild as well, only one bug ever found (by me) and nothing found by the pros. If there is a hitchhiker somewhere I hope I can kill it...
