How to safely use DE and will it be useful in this situation?

   The bedroom is empty except for a couple of pieces of furniture with nothing in it and a mattress.

   I haven't used DE yet because I feel there is a large risk I'll inhale the dust. If I use it in there must I keep the window closed so a breeze doesn't blow it into the air. How do you safely apply it and how often?

   If I use DE, was it a big mistake to put all belongings from the infested room into ziplocs and bring them to the living room. Some will be opened regularly. Should I have left everything in there for the DE to kill them? thanks.
