Hi, This is my first post. I just got back from vacation yesterday (a glorious week free from the bedbugs we've had at home for a couple months now). When we got home I took a nap on what I thought was an uninfected couch and woke up with about eight bites! Welcome back!

Anyway, my question is, is there anything I can do to make my bites look and feel less severe? They are huge, swollen welts that turn blood red after two or three days. My doctor prescribed Fluocinonide which is supposedly very powerful, but it doesn't help at all. Aside from being in total agony, I am really embarrassed to leave the house without covering up my arms and legs (where most of the bites are). This is hard to do when its 90 degrees out. Is there a way to get rid of the swelling and intense redness? I would really appreciate any help or guidance you can provide. Thank you.

You should not be taking advice from anyone here on how to treat bites. To my knowledge there are no physicians on these forums. As such you are merely going to get personal opinions or things that worked for an individual. Humans are diverse and what works for one does not always work for another and the results can worsen things. The OTC stuff does not worry me as much as home brew concoctions that I have heard during my travels or posted on forums. BTW I am not anti natural pathapproaches; but again, seek the advice of a professional in this field if that is the approach you wish to try.

There are plenty of over the counter creams etc. that are likely safe to try but I really would encourage you to seek advice from a dermatologist (you will need a referral from your doctor). They would be the best bet to prescribe something that will not only relieve the itching but also aid in the prevention of scars (although best defended against by not scratching in the first place).

    Sincerely,

    Sean
