Is it true that a bed bug does not have the capabilities of host detection when the host (human) is over five feet away?

I'm not 100% sure but I think its something like 8 or 9 feet. They will do random searching if the host is not close by. I'm not sure how far away they can smell their own fecal traces but I estimate possibly 20/25 feet away.

I'm not sure if anyone has really done solid research on this and can prove it 100%.
