How bad is cheap old paneling for harborage?
(10 posts)-
Did a search, but couldn't find nothing. An online friend wanted to know. She lives in an older house that the landlords put up cheap, old, paneling, just basically nailed to the walls in some spots??
If they live in the walls, anyway, would this be any worse?
She says they can't take it down 'cos the landlord won't let her..
I told her try to shoot some dust in there where she could??

I had a bedroom furniture with wood veneer. A man who really knew a lot about bedbugs told me that bedbugs can live between the wood veneer and the hardwood of the bed and were nearly impossible to treat there. However, I don't know how much worse wood paneling would be than anything else. Bedbugs can even live under wallpaper (where is is separating slightly from the wall underneath) I've heard. If you are trying to kill bedbugs with a contact killer, you couldn't spray them under the paneling with that kind of pesticide, but you need residual pesticides.

Wood paneling is a potential nightmare! It is a perfect area for safe harborage and also an ideal location for egg laying. Bed bugs like to lay eggs on unfinished wood & the back side of the paneling has rough surfaces bed bugs like to attach their eggs to.

skin crawling at the thought of what's behind that wood paneling

Hi,
What we call tongue and groove wood paneling can be a problem with bed bugs if it is located close to an infestation or if it becomes infested. In such cases you literally need to remove it and have it treated. In reality though removing it and not replacing it is often a better course of action.
I would however state that before removing the paneling check it for signs of bed bugs as there is no point in removing and treating it if it is not infected.

im getting the creeps thinking about my room...parquet flooring which obviously has wood skirting.

if the floor is in good condition and well sealed it should pose no greater risk than any other floor.

It's a great place to put DE, Drione or NIC 325, behind. Then you might try sealing it if possible. Even duct tape can work and it comes in so many colors these days.
