Homeowner's or Renter's Insurance
(4 posts)-
I don't think that I've ever read about bedbugs and Homeowner's or Renter's Insurance on the internet, but does anyone know if these insurances cover household items that had to be trashed because of bedbugs?
I plan to call my insurance agent today about this, but I thought I'd post this question on the board also.

There is at least one old thread on this somewhere here. You are not the first to ask this question. When I questioned my State Farm agent back in January, she said that I was the second person in a few months to bring this up wrt to bedbugs. The other person had renter's insurance and I had homeowner's coverage on my belongings. She checked again with the underwriter, but the answer was still the same. My belongings were not covered for damage or loss in the event of an insect infestation. You insurer may be different, but... I doubt it. Maybe I should add that an attorney subsequently advised me to hire an insurance lawyer to fight this, but it didn't seem worth the hassle and legal costs.

I don't know of any home owner's insurance policy that covers insect infestations. They don't cover any insect infestation, not bed bugs, not termites that I know of. They consider it a "lack of maintenance" issue I was told. We had termites 3 yrs ago, okay that one was hard to swallow, but okay. Bed bugs...well, not a lack of maintenance issue imo.

I called my insurance agent today and paulaw0919 said the same thing that my agent said with the exception of the "lack of maintenance" reason. And I agree with Paula that the "lack of maintenance" reason doesn't seem to really apply when it comes to bbs.
