HELP!!! reinfestation???
(23 posts)-
We had bedbugs in the summer time (july) which we had treated for by an exterminator. We did everything; mattress covers, interceptors for under bed, washing EVERYTHING. we got rid of the problem and then since then there have no bites or any signs of them. Just yesterday I decided to do a thorough cleaning of my kitchen and in one of my cabinets I saw a couple of dead bed bugs (very dry). Could it be that they are from the summer or is this an early sign of another infestation? We have not had any bites or seen any live ones... PLEASE HELP!!! I think I might just lose it ;(

Hi Estee
I am not an expert, but old dried up dead bedbugs don't sound like a re-infestation. I hope other more knowledgeable people will add to this....
Castings from bedbugs as they molt into the next instar stage would be more of a sign of re-infestation, but then even those can be very old. But a dead bedbug is a good thing.
I can relate to your reaction. The thought of re-infestation (any sign or symptom) freaks me out and we've been clear a year now.
Sounds like you've been "triggered" be seeing them. Breathe, herbal tea, walk in fresh air. Breathe some more. You were unprepared (just cleaning the kitchen etc) and that means your guard was down. Take care of yourself.

you're prolly looking at dead roaches and not bed bugs

Hi,
Could you possibly take and post a picture.
As crazy as it may sound it is possible to tell if something is recently dead or long dead from some of the tell tale signs.
Otherwise drop me a PM and I will give you an address to send it to and I will check, post from UK to US takes 3 - 5 days but oddly enough longer the other way around.
If its very brittle, dry and dehydratedly thin then the chances are its from the summer and they often are found falling out of the oddest places for some time to come.

Just an FYI...based on my experience
Finding an old dead bed bug is a very scary thing, I know. Our infestation was in 2007 and I found one dead bed bug 6 months after structural fumigation(Vikane), one bed bug a year after the fumigation and one bed bug 2 years after the fumigation. 95% of our belongings, furniture were gone before we finally got rid if the bugs. We replaced all flooring in the house after the bugs were gone as well. Based on where I found two the bugs they very well could have came up from the air vent when the heat comes on. Point is, it's been a VERY long time since our infestation and still not a sign of fecal traceson/near the beds. It was just a few old decapitated bed bugs that popped up.
Most likely, based on the location of where you found the bug, it may very well be another kind of bug and not a bed bug at all. But even if it is a bed bug there is also a good chance it is every old and has dropped loose from some crack/crevice some where.
If there are no signs of fecal traces, no live bugs, no cast skins near resting and sleeping areas......I would get the bug found examined by a professional entomologist for verification. The result may very well put your mind at ease very quickly. In the meantime I would just keep an eye out in those areas for a while.....In all honesty it very old bed bug or not a bed bug at all.
Hope this helps.

Thank you all so much...I already feel so much better! It was pretty dry and brittle, unfortunately I already threw it out ;( If I find any more (which I hope I wont) I will definitely send it to you to check out. Thanks again!

I just went into the same cabinet last night and found a couple more dead ones....what does this mean?? I cleaned out the cabinet so now im thinking maybe I still have them since they wernt there before unless they drop down from the drawer on top of it? UGHHH I cant take this... Im going mad from all this!!! This time I saved them in a sealed bag to have them examined. I just dont get it because I havent seen any live ones and we didnt get any bites, we also have not seen any signs in our interceptors which are under all our beds. What could be happening here?!
-
I feel for you. Can you post a pic of what you found? Maybe some of the experts can help.
-
They die in the cracks and crevices that they lived in. Shake the thing and dead ones can fall out long after.
Take that drawer and give it a few really good shakes and slams to see if more fall out.
Post pics of what you have. As KQ infers small roaches can appear to be BBs to the freaked out mind.
Take David up on his offer.

OH NO!!!! Im freaking out!! woke up with a couple strange bites this morning... its all too familiar. What now? Im trying to prevent another infestation. I have some bedlam spray from the last time...do I start spraying it around? I hate chemicals but I also cant function on no sleep! HELP! What would you guys do? I have all the mattress and pillow covers already on; I also have some DE too (not sure how to safely use it). I cant afford to hire anyone this time around! ;(
-
Another question... In the summer when we had bb the bites were itchy like crazy. This time around I have 2 bites but they dont itch...what does that mean?!
-
Have you done a real good inspection of your sleeping area? This would be a good place to start.
-
I have a metal frame and wiped the whole thing down, didnt see anything. Nothing on my mattress and box spring which are encased. I think Im reaching my breaking point! I dont understand why I would wake up with 2 bites... could it just be coincidental with the timing of finding the 2 dead ones? UGGGGGHHHHH!!! Either way I sprayed bedlam around and just praying that I can get a decent nights sleep. We payed a lot for a PCO the first time around, am I supposed to do that again or can I get rid of them myself?

sorry its the best I can do. My cameras broken so I had to use my phone to take the pic

How big are those?
Missing lotsa parts so either cast skins of something or something very long dead.
Need more experienced eyes but the shape gives me some reasonable doubt. Doesn't scream bed bug to me. Cross your fingers.

Thanks for getting the picture up!
I'm with Jim on this one ...
I can't get a clear enough view to make out what it is.
It's not a bed bug in my opinion. It kinda looks like the underside of some type of beetle larva but I just can't make it out. If you can take a few pictures from different views and maybe on a clear white sheet of paper somebody can figure it out. -
Are you fellows looking at the large view:

Yep. I still can't say 100% BB or not. There isn't enough structural detail in the pic, legs, head etc.
David, Sean, Jeff, or EffeCi would know best.
I saved a dead adult BB but after a while many parts fell off it. The remaining abdomen was much more round than oblong like the sample above.

So I have doubt on what it was but given so much missing, regardless of species, it looks old.
BBs die and no little pallbearers remove the bodies or skins. Long after annihilation these can fall out of voids. I'm hopeful that is the case here.

Thanks Jim, I sure hope youre right and that theyre either not bed bugs or bb long dead. Its crazy how these nasty things can make you go completely insane! I wish I had better pictures but every time theyre taken out of the bag they seem to fall apart more.
If it is indeed a bb what can I do this time around? Do people hire a PCO a second time? Anything I can do myself?
-
Also is it normal to have different reactions to bb bites? The first time we had them I had crazy itching, the 2 bites i found yesterday didnt itch at all.... anyone?
-
Estee,
I'm experiencing the same thing you are currently. I moved late last year and had my belonings both chemically and heat treated to prevent reinfestation when moving. Since I've moved, I find little bumps not at all like the ones I experienced during the infestation. The more I worry about these bumps and reinfestation, the more bumps appear. The less I worry, the less bumps appear. I have found no other signs of BB's. I believe Killer Queen is correct in saying that your mind and skin will play tricks on you if you start obsessing before all the facts are in. Just relax, maybe put some white sheets and blankets on your bed and investigate in the morning for bloodspots. I wish you the best of luck. -
Thank you so much sunshine...youre hopefully right. I havent seen any other signs and believe me Ive done crazy searching. I do believe those were dead bb that I found but they do look old so Im going to relax (try at least) and keep my fingers crossed. This whole thing has completely changed my life and Ive seriously gone crazy to the point where I want to divorce my husband for things like pushing our bed against the wall and with the sheets half off (did I just say that out loud?) Ive even started to spray that bedlam stuff around and Im generally a crazy go green all natural kinda gal! Im definitely gonna keep an eye out and in the mean time just pray that god will be kind to me ;). Good luck to you too!
