Would a bb be crawling across the bedroom carpet at about 9pm? I caught it on sticky tape and its small, about 3mm in length, reddish brown. I'm looking at the pics on the website but its so small, its hard to compare properly. My husband is still sceptical but I think it must be one. I thought they moved fast and they would avoid the light but this was slow enough for me to catch easily and the lights were all on. Could this be the cause of my horrible bites?

Hi ladybug, it could be a BB. If you want to lose it you can squeeze it. The result, if it is a bed bug, is a lot of blood not a little, similar to the enormous amount you get from a mosquito when squeezed. If you need more pictures you can see several on my site www.abedbugspecialist.com.au

can you take a picture of it? I would not smoosh it, I would keep it to get it identified by a PCO or an entemologist? If you can get a picture of it, you could post it to flick or photobucket and give the link here. Spidey gave me advice on how to get a close up, he told me to use the 3 times loop magnifier up against the lens to photograph. Don't smoosh it until you know what it is, you might need it as proof.

    Hi,

    Just spotted this.

Do NOT squash it, identifying mush is almost impossible at the best of times. Place the sample in a protective enclosure (contact lens cases work well) and have it identified by an entomologist of a pest controller who has a specialism in insect identification.

Once you have had it identified you can answer it is is likely to be the thing that is causing the bites.

It can be hard at times to get accurate and high quality images, the camera equipment I use is highly specialised and thus extremely costly. Using magnifying glasses and loops will help as will USB powered microscopes which are now a lot more cost effective.

    Regards,

    David

I have it encased within two pieces of sticky tape - it got kind of smushed in the catching but its not completely flattened. However, I got several more bites last night so whatever it is, there must be more of them. Am seriously thinking we need to call a PCO - I want to clear out my closet as that's about the only part of the room I haven't yet checked but should I do this prior to the PCO coming? I don't want to destroy anything that might help them to identify what this is.

Smooshed or not, your PCO will be able to identify it. I've caught a couple of adults and a nymph with tape and they are still identifiable as bedbugs after I unintentionally smooshed them onto a business card.

Also, it is a myth that the bugs will avoid light or only come out late at night. They also do not move quickly. Every one that I have caught was slow, slow, slow. Once spotted, you have plenty of time to decide the means with which you wish to capture it. You might even have time to pour yourself a cup of tea.

Leave your home exactly as it is so you don't destroy any potential evidence. Definitely call in a pro. You want to be rid of whatever is biting you whether it be bed bugs or some other pest. I hope it isn't bed bugs for your sake. That is one difficult battle.

Thanks everyone. I am leaving the closets as they are until I can get someone to come in and inspect. I cleaned out under my daughter's crib yesterday and found what looks like fecal matter - but whatever it is is quite big, bigger than I would have expected for a bb. I kept everything I found. Also found a dead bug, small and reddish, who knows what we've got living in our house. The baby hasn't been bitten, thank goodness, but they continue to feast on me. I have a terrible allergic reaction, my doctor is sending me to an allergist but I think I already know what the problem is. Let's see what she has to say.

FYI: Don't take too long to get a PCO in there. The longer you wait, the more severe the infestation will be.

With that being said, I'm glad your exploring all possibilities instead of shouting BEDBUGS!! from the rooftops.
