Good/ Scary to Know
(9 posts)-
I called the PCO my landlord was using, in an attempt to be sleuthy. I posed as a new customer and asked quesions about treatment methods. (BTW: Suspicion Confirmed - they don't know what they are doing)
Point is this: the woman told me she's gotten about 20 calls regarding bedbugs in the last 3 days. Yikes!!!!!! That's a lot of bedbugs.

wow that is scary! how are you going to approach your land lord with this info?

Hi VMP. :)
I don't plan to present the ll w/ this info. I plan to let my atty know that the exterminator was fogging, because they were unaware that this was ineffective against bbs. Now they are using pyrethrin sprays, but based on eyewitness accounts from other tenants, these are not being applied appropriately.
I just thought it was interesting how rampant these things are. Every local PCO I've spoken w/ & even the guy in the yard dept @ the local hardwarem, all say the same thing: "I don't know what's going on? I get multiple calls about these things every day" And yet... I've read nothing in the papers about how quickly they've spread.
In my new neighborhood there is a big house about 2 blocks away, which I believe is a multi-unit conversion. Out on the lawn I saw a mattress & a sofa. hmmm.... wonder what that's about.

only 20 in 3 days.
I think my record was taking about 80 calls in a single day.
At one stage in the summer we had to install an extra line so that the technicians could call in on an unlisted number.
When you look at the numbers and how fast this is spreading its a wonder that more politicians have not been affected yet. I suspect the first case in the white house would get some fast action in terms of public education. I wonder if the incumbent president will have the place screened first, I know I certainly would, I have long since made it my golden rule to check the bed of any bush before I get into it (OK nobugs its late here but feel free to edit that if its too close to the knuckle).

Please keep one thing in mind ... the person answering the phone is generally not the person doing the treatment. The person answering the phone should receive training on how to answer questions.
If you speak to the technician and you get the same feeling then you ought to be worried.

David - that is really scary. I'll never look at a discarded couch or mattress the same way again. It's so strange that such a big problem can be kept so covert. - ewww Also- rofl at your last line :)
Sean - I already knew that they didn't know what they were doing (they had been treating my building for 3 months w/out making a dent- yuck) I just wanted to know what they were doing wrong specifically. This company is very small so they don't have the ordinary call center of people that won't stray from the script - lol. They have a "biologist" on staff who determines the treatment methodology, she was the one I spoke with. I'm guessing they didn't go over bed bugs in her bio studies, small wonder - lol (why wouldn't they have an entomologist on staff instead?)

Just so you know, I have heard PCOS say there may be some legitimate kinds of "fogging" that a PCO can do. (To "flush bed bugs out".) This does not = what is sold over the counter as bug bombs. And I think it is only okay in a limited fashion. The PCOS here would know more.
And just to back up Sean also-- we have heard some crazy things receptionists have said, when their techs were doing or expecting no such thing. This is not ok, but it does happen. Again, just throwing it out there for what it's worth. It DOES sound from what you say like something dodgy is going on.

I noticed that Sprayway Good Night is flying off of the shelves at my local hardware store.

sereneseek,
Yes. Pronto is popular too. (They're not foggers, though.)
These sprays are unlikely to solve the problem, but a lot of people start there, thinking that bed bugs are as easy to deal with as roaches or ants.
