As an avid K9 handler, I come across some pretty interesting advances in the world of scent detection and this one deserves spreading the word about HeroRATs. APOPO has developed techniques to train a particular breed of rat to detect land mines or to detect TB in lab samples. Bed bugs are pretty bad, but those two, in I daresay in anyone's books, are definitely worse. Adopt a rat yourself or give the gift of adoption for that hard to buy person on your list: HeroRATs. Hi Ken,

Its a great site and an amazing video that is well worth watching.

We did test trial a bedbug sniffing rat service in London but it did not go down too well.

    Spot on.
    Why not indeed.
Except it would scare half the humans out of the house before it munched its first bug.
I am not sure if you are just mucking about or serious so forgive any sense of humour failure.
But being scared of rats, thats a problem with the humans, not the rat.
I had a friend who kept rats at school.
They were clean, smart and loving and would be a very good idea for helping eradicate bedbugs as they would be easily taught to hunt them down. And eat them, and want to eat as many as possible.

Again I wonder if someone hasnt started serious research into this as a possible way to combat the problem.
I wrote earlier about using hedgehogs and I didnt propose it seriously because I am only a newbite and need to find out first what is going on in Bug world.
But I am looking into it but alas have found very little in the modern world about Hedgehogs and the use of/domestication/how intelligent/ready to learn/effectiveness etc.

Its not really fair to grab an animal and use it as a servant when it would prefer to live its life as nature intended so I was thinking of using those which could not be returned to the wild.
Three legs on my hedgehog and I dont need to move on (sings).
And perhaps their offspring as they too would have a shock if they were sent out to fend for themselves.
They certainly used Hedgehogs in the MiddleEast millenia ago but they got associated with an old cult so the use seemed to die out.

It throws up all sorts of ethical questions because animals deserve to choose how to live, more than what we choose for them.
I'm no bleeding heart liberal but these little guys deserve our respect not our conditioning.
But yes its definitely an potion worth considering.
I think so, but I defer to better judgement from those who know their stuff.

Rats are pretty amazing creatures. I had pet rats in my 20s and I found them to be delightful and inquisitive. I can't deny it would be my dream if I had a pet rat that found bed bugs and eggs as tasty as chocolate cake, one that I could send out on search and destroy missions every night.

Fantasy I know, but I can't help dreaming of it.

Ok. Scabs AND roadkill on my things to collect.
I hope Santas got a strong stomache.

Crikey ( I am watching my language) Isdrg76.
You definitely should give it a try.
    And I am not joking.
You know how to look after them.
It would keep them fit too.RLol.
But you definitely know better than me about how suitable a suggestion the OP made.
I think its a terrific idea but check it out first, lady.
