A friend picked up a nice desk off the street about nine months ago. He worked at the desk every day and night for the whole nine months and never had any bites or itches.

Recently, he found out the house that the desk was in front of had bed bugs now. Now it dawned on him that the previous tenant who put the desk out there probably had the same problem. Should he get rid of the desk? How long until you know that there isn't an infestation in the desk?

    Thanks!

After 9 months unchecked, there would be a sizable infestation. Surely that desk would be full of evidence by now.

He needs to learn what to look for and then look.

He did a real dumb thing picking up that desk but may have gotten real lucky.

It is a dumb thing to pick something up off the street when you are NOT EDUCATED on BB's, as we unfortunately on here are.

When you don't know it's a serious up and coming problem, you're not dumb. You just think you scored some free furniture.

People like us, hopefully will help to get the word out that doing such things is not a good idea.

    * I mean it would be dumb to pick something up off the streets when you are already educated on BB's. Not so dumb when you're not educated on the subject.

I'm even worried about brand NEW furniture and the logistics of getting the new furniture into my home. I cross the street if I'm out walking and see furniture or bedding by the curb waiting to be picked up by sanitation. It's out there for a reason people!

Yes. I will never have my furniture delivered in a truck anymore...I'll do my own pick up. The thought of it being in a truck that possibly hauled away someone's old furniture is too much for me!

Never will go to a yard sale or pick up off street, ever. ever!

Exactly! I need a new futon or love seat for my den/guest room, but am terrified of picking up bugs from the delivery truck. I don't know how to guarantee that the truck hasn't been used to transport used furniture and mattresses from customers who have bought new furniture, and I'm not at all sure that I can rely on the company to tell me the truth. At this point I'm putting off any purchases until a friend with a van comes for a visit. We'll just transport the new furniture ourselves.

absolutely. My husband bought a pick up truck.

We'll do it all ourselves from now on, thank you.
UGH. Stinks being so paranoid, stinks more being so ignorant to it though.

Thanks so much for the information. I will tell him never, never to pick up furniture off the street. And I will do the same. Hopefully we can spread the word out more. This is a great site. I wish this information was more readily available on craigslist or some sites where people can see it. The guy who is putting his bed bug ridden stuff outside right now, I feel really sorry for. Just knowing about someone who has bed bugs is enough to be traumatizing. I can't imagine what you had to go through. At least there's a place that people can go to for support and information.

    Thanks again so much!!

Actually, it's a shame that the people who put the desk out on the curb, did not put a sign that said bed bugs or if they were in a rush and didn't want to feel responsible for wrapping it in plastic, or didn't want to shame the landlord, at least put "Moldy furniture, Do Not Take" and also in Spanish in case the person couldn't read English. Maybe this should be added in the instruction manual, so people in a rush or who are just so traumatized (as I could imagine) can make a quick note. Something! This is obviously distressing me a bit. I wish there was something we could do to stop the spread!!

He just told me he also got this other cabinet about 2-3 months ago. I've checked it for him and don't see any signs, but there are parts I can't get to. He hasn't had any problems and it's near his bed right now. I'll probably recommend he throw it out, but is this a rush? Sorry for all these questions, just want to know the urgency. Thanks so much for everything.
