Found bed bugs in box spring,
(13 posts)-
I found some bed bugs in my son's box spring on march 25th. About six of them all lumped together! I freaked! Called the PCO that day and they came out the next day. He told me to get rid of things like my son's tv,radio, DVD player, everthing in his bathroom, the luggage i had in the other bedroom, an upholsterd chair, idid as he said and took a pickup truck load of stuff to the county dumpmto burn. The PCO Sprayed the furniture, in my son' room; adjoining bedroom and bathroom and the room directly above his room. I got rid of the mattress and box spring as i didn't want him to sleep on it. I have become a bed bug soldier. I now live and breath these things wanting to make sue nothing is in my home. I bought the mattress/boxspring encasements for all the remaining beds. Bought the climb up interceptors, ordered two different sprays and a 10lb bucket of Diamaceous dust. I never heard of any of this stuff until march 26th. The PCO is returning April 6th. I used the sprays but not the dust. Does anyone know if putting dust all over your house would affect what the PCO has done? Am I to leave everything out of my sons room, new mattress, laundered clothing, etc. until after the PCO gives the ok? Btw my husband thinks I'm crazy since I think about this all the time! I just can't stand the thought of something sucking on us! Ew! Please help! And thanks.

Why would a PCO tell you to get rid of everything? Did he do anything such as searching to see how extensive your infestation is, background info to decide how you could have acquired them? Are you in an apartment, house? It doesn't sound like he really knows how to treat for bed bugs.

After reading all of these post I think you might be right. The rep came first and then the exterminator later that day. The rep did the walk through and gives the price. The exterminator went through and sprayed the few pieces of furniture that was left. I asked was it necessary to get rid of everything including unopened soap, shower curtains, etc. He said its better to be safe than sorry. He did ask the, have you traveled question? But iwe havent in quite a while And we live in a home.. I collected the six bugs that I found on some tape and put them in a container so he could see them. So they were Id. so far I've haven't seen anything else. i think now it was overkill but now need to know how to proceed. A brochure detailing all of this from the PCO would have been nice. I know he did use the correct products as I went to the domyownpestcontrol store here in Atlanta and found all of it for way less than what they charged me.

Personally he (company) sounds incompetent to have said that it's better to be safe than sorry on items that never become infested. You tossed so much away and then the exterminator sprays a little on the items that are left. How old is your son? Is it possible that bed bugs were picked up at school?

That may have been the extent of the infestation. Rep and/or technician should have performed a much better review and inspection. Had you asked them if they ever treated bed bug infestations? They always say better to be safe than sorry and have all their clients toss so much away and then they spray what's left in the home. They provide a warranty? -
If you are paying for this, honestly, I would look into other PCOs. Telling you to throw out unopened soap, radio, etc. is really unlikely to be necessary. It suggests the PCO is not very experienced with bed bugs. I am not an expert like loubugs, but it sounds like your problem may be fairly small and localized to the bed.
I would not start treating yourself with dusts --DIY on top of professional treatment is not a great idea. I would certainly not do so without having your PCO approve the do it yourself steps, though again, I really would consider a new PCO, given the advice you've been given so far.

You have already paid, if I understand correctly.
-
Yes, of course, if you've already paid and the tossing out has already occurred, then you might stay with this firm. If there is a point where more services are to be paid for, though, I'd bail.
-
Yes I've already paid. They said they've treated other houses/ before. this is a fairly large company in georgia. They do all my other pest control; termite, fireant, general quarterly pest control and I've never had a problem. So I naturally thought they were the best option. When he comes back next Friday will ask again was throwing everything out really necessary as I haven't seen anymore. My son is special needs and does go to a center with other special needs adults. I really think that might be where they came from. Each day now we both stop at the garage door and discard all articles of clothing in washer. Next question should I go ahead and let him treat again since we've paid for the service? fter that if I see anything else will call another company? So confusing!

Paul Bello is in Atlanta, maybe he will chime in with his thoughts on this.

Paul is a neighbor, that's true, and might be able to weigh in or PM you. It is quite possible that the bed bugs had been introduced via your son's school. Even though the pest control company is large, doesn't mean they are good. From what you explained, it doesn't appear that the people you dealt with understand bed bugs.

First off Nobugs when you write "unopened soap, radio," you are obviously not aware of the no soap radio clause in some contracts.
But seriously folks discarding of items should be a lst resort after other options have been employed. Most items can be treated one way or another, encased, steamed, chemically treated, fumigated (yes I know that's a form of chemical), heated etc. I have dealt with some couches that in the end did have to be discarded but that's because the remediation options cost more than the item.

Thanks for the updates.

For those confused by Winston's remarks, some PCO firms apparently have clauses in the contracts telling consumers they MUST toss out a particular item (bed, sofa) across the board, as opposed to on a case by case basis.
That, IMO is not only a good way to waste money but a good way to spread bed bugs to trashpickers. And remember, I live in NYC, where even the upper crust have been known to pick things up off curbs.
