Found a bed bug at hotel

My family and I stayed at a hotel in Utah and found a bed bug. We did not have any bites ( we had slept there for one night!).The hotel staff washed our laundry and inspected our luggage and compensated us for the night. After that incident,we continued our trip and stayed in two other hotels. We never had bites during our trip. When we got home I left our luggage in the driveway and I did most of the laundry( the rest are in bags out in driveway). It has been almost a week since our trip and I have not seen any signs of bugs. We still haven't experienced any bites but I am still concerned. How long do you check for bugs? How can I make sure I did not bring them home? I am not sure what to do next, Please help.

First, try not to panic as you have taken some precautions already. I would continue with the laundering of your clothes and I would actually recommend taking them straight to the dryer as that is the heat you need to debug your stuff. Realize that bed bugs come home with people by wandering into their stuff and it is not the case that they always will end up coming home with you. I'm sure every day people stay unknowingly in infested rooms take no precautions and don't bring them home. Hang in there.

Thank you djames for your response. My husband and I used to travel frequently(here in the states and over seas) until we had our first kid (2006) and never ever saw any bugs. I was pretty freaked out when we found out the bug was a bed bug. Are bed bugs common in hotels nowdays? After we came home I checked the web to see if any reports have been made in the hotel we saw the bug but found nothing. How can you trust that the hotel you are staying will be bug free? We have plans to travel more to different destinations but this bed bug issue is really bothering me.
Also, for how long should I check for the bugs 3,4 weeks after? and do you keep the washed clothes from the trip in bags and for how long? Can you wear them after washed and dried?
What do you do with leather shoes? Can the bugs stay in your car? (we put our luggage in the car to bring it home). Thanks
